Taxed1
Hey all, I’m a 45 year old bass head. I just got back into the bass game after 20 years. I promised I would never go back once my stuff got robbed 20 years ago. Please rate my install. All was done by me. It’s just an expensive hobby but I love the outcome! The big 3 is done but I am still on my stock Sonata 110 amp alternator. I have a 220 Amp alternator sitting in a box for 1 year because I am too lazy to install it. I will install it soon I hope, it’s just a pain in the ass on a Sonata. It’s all done from the top but the alt is at the bottom of this 4 cylinder. I have dual runs from my stock alt to a new wet cell stock battery. 2 fused runs from the front battery to an XS Power 975. Dual grounds to the frame for the battery & 2 separate grounds to the frame from the SFB-2000. All runs are 1/0 gauge welding wire from Temco Industrial. Shhh, don’t tell anyone but this wire is pure copper but 50% less than the audio branded wire. The subs are 2 12” Skar EVLs, 4 ohm dual voice coils, wired to 1 ohm. The box is a 4.0 cubic foot built by Custom Enclosures LLC, it is tuned to 32 hertz. It is sealed off from the trunk using wood, expanding foam & some noodles, lol. The entire trunk, lid & side panels are dampened with Kilmat. For almost 1 year I had the subs turned around about a foot from the rear trunk. I just spun them around & sealed it off on Saturday. Oh my, what a freaking difference. It was good before but I had no trunk space. Now it is freaking insane & I have some trunk space back. It hits so damn hard now. When I’m done driving around or at a store I just flip up the seats & no one can see anything except for the hole I made in the center arm rest / pass through that I screwed a speaker grill to if I have passengers in the back. I can also flip that up and nothing is shown. I still need to spray some black paint on the wood & foam. The battery is stuck against the wall & the box. The amp is held down with a crap load of double sided tape. The speaker wires are 8 gauge welding wire.

Money is the issue for now. If I blow these subs then obviously I will probably get an SFB-3000 and maybe the same or equivalent subs that don’t break the $299 price range. I was playing these today, almost full tilt, & I smelled them but I was NOT clipping. It starting raining so I had the windows up when I got a whiff. They are about 9 months old & for them to still smell is odd without clipping.

Arthur79
I've smelt subs that were "broken in" that were just playing loud in a well built box, running them on clean/unclipped power. As long as you are sure you're not clipping, whatever glue etc should burn off and clear up (assuming you aren't significantly over driving the subs). I built a box for a customer last year (I need to do a build log and upload pics and video for it) and it was a similar story. He has owned the subs for a few years but had never had them in a proper box on plenty of good clean power and for the first week or so, he had the same thing with the smell that went away after about 20 hours of play.
