DD Redline 612 vs Alpine Type R-W12d4

I would love to hear each setup, unfortunately there aren't many people into car audio where I live. As far as I understand the general difference between 2 12s vs 1 15" sub is that 2 12s will be GENERALLY louder on the meter although there are many, many factors involved, as opposed to the 15 which will hit lows better and will "shake the car". My previous car was a sedan and with the seats folded I got massive trunk rattle and a spike between 40-45hz most probably due to the car. When I played decafs and rebassed music which is by the way my favourite type of music along with some chill/deep house, the R Type was struggling a bit which didn't make sense to me as it had optimal, well built box with low tuning.

Now I am planning to buy a hatchback which is way better for a system than a sedan in my opinion. Now I am looking for opinions from more experienced people so I can make a better decision although it's hard when you can't really hear the system before you finish it..

When you say that the 12s will be "punchier" what do you mean exatly? Thanks again for your help!

Since the cones/voice coils on the 600 series 12s have a fair less mass (individually) compared to the 700 series 15.  Less mass "generally" equates to better cone control.  That is why SQ focused drivers have light cones and extremely soft/pliable surrounds.  As power handling goes up cones, surrounds, voice coils and motors have to become stiffer and heavier (more moving mass).  In this case, the 700 series 15 will definitely play lower but fast transitions (think kick drum type fast paced transitions) at high volume levels will not be reproduced as accurately as they are from the pair of 612s.

Given that you will be in a hatchback, I think you would be happier with the single 15 than the 2 12s (assuming I understand the nature of your preferred music)  Maybe toss out a few artists/tracks and I can check them out 😉

In a hatch, I would expect you to get a similar (or maybe even a little more) output in the front of the cabin with a single 715 than a pair of 612s in a trunk setup with the back seats up.

Still a tough call, I think it still comes back to if you prioritize low frequency extension\output (below 30Hz) over higher output and more accurate reproduction of fast paced transitions in the upper 30s/lower 40s.

What does a dd 715 cost?

Where I am located 715 is around 320€, 2 612s are 310-30€, new.

I am still appreciating the old ones: Lil Jon (BME click especially), Three 6 Mafia, Gorilla Zoe, E40, Young Jeezy etc. If I get the chance to have a demo, I'll decide on the spot 😂

What is the demensions of the space you have for sub or subs?  A good box is the most important.

Planning to buy either an Audi A3 5 door 2008-9 or a Golf 5, 5 door as well same years. No restrictions on the dimensions, just need to fit inside 🤣

I think I am going to get the single 715, I read only good reviews about it. The only thing left is the box. What will be the ideal box in terms of cuft/liters, port area and the optimal tuning frequency for a low build? Thanks everybody for your help!

Looking at the specs, I believe you would be happy with about a 148 liter enclosure.  That includes woofer displacement, but not port or bracing displacement.

As for port tuning, somewhere between 28-32 would likely be the sweet spot.  My enclosure is tuned to 28Hz and it feels like Put On by Young Jeezy was made for that tuning frequency.  My next enclosure I will probably shoot for 32 Hz as I think that will fit my particular listening style better.

If you would like to get a since of scale, here is an example box design provided by DD Audio:

https://ddaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/15-4cuft.pdf

It's a 4 cubic foot (113.267 Liter) enclosure for one of their 15s.  I would think this could serve as a starting point, but I didn't see what frequency it's tuned to.

Are you planning to build the enclosure yourself or have a shop build it for you?  If you are having a shop build it, just tell them you want a 148L net enclosure tuned a XHz.  If you are planning to build it yourself I can try to model up something in WinISD (or if you are comfortable using WinISD that's a good place to start for box size, port size and to model the output)

Fun times!  When do you anticipate getting the new car?

No way I'll be building the box myself, 😄 I'll leave this to a buddy who specialises in this stuff. I'll buy the car probably in the next month or two, depends if I can find a well looked after one. Fun times indeed! Thank you once again, really appreciate all your help! I really have an idea on what to look for.

  • 4 months later...

Hey guys, sorry to drag up an old post. Am considering getting a single 612e for my car. Its a daily, i would say SQL set up. I plan on tuning around 33hz n i got 900rms to power it. I like that deep clean loud type of bass. Any one can give me some feedback or any experience with the sub or if it would shine with what am looking for?? I also have the ia lethal injection 12" in mind, if that may work better

Thanks a mill
