Door speaker pod fabrication question

Recommended Posts

Since I can't find anyone around me that can fiberglass my door pods for me, guess I'm going to have to ruin them....I mean.... fabricate them myself. I want to hold the speaker grill in place using magnets. Anyone know where I can get some small, strong magnets I can use?

I've used these for several projects with good success:

I would also recommend the SMD SunFlash resin:

It penetrates well and really does stay workable/liquid until you hit it with UV.

If you find yourself doing glass work after dark (like I have more times than I can count) these work well:

I have 3 or 4 of them.  The piece doesn't cure as fast as placing it in direct sunlight but it doesn't take longer than 5ish minutes assuming you can hit the piece with enough light.

Strong UV light messes with my eyes a lot so I use these when working with the lights:

You might want to invest in a decent VOC rated respirator.  I'm a big fan of the 3M PPE stuff, but there are reasonably priced alternatives out there.  I'm also guilty of wearing nothing but some gloves in a "well ventilated" area, but the stuff can get thick/overpowering if you are doing it in an enclosed space pretty quickly...

Hope this helps and can't wait to see how they come along!!!

And good on you for doing it.  Every time I convince myself that fiberglass is the only way, I swear I will never do it again...until the next time (rinse/repeat)  I hate fiberglass but it's so good for certain applications (and arguably the only way to do door pods/replacement skins....)

I'm getting all itchy just talking about it....LoLoL

I was looking at those very magnets. Just figured I'd ask if anyone had other/ maybe better opinions on it. I'm going to order my speaker mesh off them as well.

Also, I was planning on using the sun flash as well. Going to use it for my sub enclosure, and I've only heard good things about it.

I've already got a respirator. I used to do graffiti a lot 🤫

I've watched the videos on simple speaker pods and fiberglass speaker pods on Car Audio Fabrication YouTube channel probably 5 times each now. I have an idea of how I'm going to approach it, but I'm not enthusiastic about it. It would be different if I at least had someone to look over my shoulder to show me how. I'm really going off youtube videos. I wish I could have started on something easier. 4 8's and 4 tweeters in each door is going to be an undertaking!

Thanks for the vote of confidence though. I don't have any other choice so we'll see how it goes🤣
