Enclosure advice needed for 2x12’s

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I have two of the following subs - https://www.pioneer-car.eu/be/en/products/ts-w32s4

I have been putting an enclosure together using subboxpro - https://subbox.pro/en/design/?bt=2&bw=1020&bh=360&bv=73.6&mt=18&fp=1&sq=2&ss=12&cd=281&md=146&sv=0&so=0&sd=60&sb=&sn=&pt=4&pq=1&rf=35&pd=138.23&pw=2&pa=150&pp=100

Need help on working out what the slot port area should be and what it should be tuned to? Aim is for a 2.6cuft box tuned to play deep and musically. 102cm width x 36cm height available for space, depth around 30cm, but really unsure if the port is correct for two subs?

Thanks

I was kind of playing with the numbers, but I'm having trouble getting the port tuned to around 32 hz and maintaining 2.6 ft³ with those measurements and keeping the port volume around 14-16 in² per ft³ (sorry, the app I have only does inches, not centimeters unfortunately).

Thank you for the quick reply Dafaseles. Are you saying I need 39in² of port area (15in² x 2.6ft³)?

I can go a bit more on depth, but around 30cm would be ideal. Would you say the follow is better suited - https://subbox.pro/en/design/?bt=2&bw=1020&bh=360&bv=73.6&mt=18&fp=1&sq=2&ss=12&cd=281&md=146&sv=0&so=0&sd=60&sb=&sn=&pt=4&pq=1&rf=32&pd=138.23&pw=2&pa=251.63&pp=100

From what I've read over the years, you want 12-16 square inches of port per square foot. So about 32 in² to about 41 ¹/2 in²

I looked at that box, the only things I can see are some of your measurements are off a little. I hate when applications (including the one I was just using) uses decimal points for inches. It makes things much harder and more confusing. For example, 3/4" MDF is 0.75". So right there, your material size is 0.71. What material are you using that is, if I had to guess, less than a 64th smaller than 3/4"? If you are in a different country than the United States, is wood measured differently? Like in centimeters? Legit question, I have no idea.

What I do, is I use this picture1949412777_Screenshot_20211111-164101_SamsungInternet.thumb.jpg.41e7986fe40e5e21b1bbd94f99d9b579.jpgit helps me convert inches from fractions into decimals.

And that port is crazy long. You'd need it to be that long in order to achieve what you're going for, but from what I've come to believe (yet, I admit, I'm am by no means a seasoned vet when it comes to enclosure design) you don't want the port extending that far behind a woofer. It hurts the output of the box and can make one subwoofer have to work harder than the other. But I could be absolutely wrong.

In the UK we use both measurements, more cm/mm but MDF wise I’ll be using is 18mm sheets. Can also get 19mm sheets.

subboxpro measurements can be changed from inches/cuft to millimetres/litres on the drop down.

I understand a bigger box would make it sound better, but a but restricted with room. Will there be a major difference if tuned to 34Hz instead?

Could you do something like this? Or would it be too big?

Sorry, everything is in inches, and our MDF here is 3/4" wide. I could try to fix it. Screenshot_20211111-171743_Ultimate Car Audio App.jpgplug that into sub box and see what it looks like. I don't have a computer, so I can't

Thank you for those figures. I’ve put them into subboxpro and it comes out like this - https://subbox.pro/en/design/?bt=2&bw=1019.2&bh=358.8&bv=74.2&mt=19&fp=1&sq=2&ss=12&cd=281&md=146&sv=0&so=0&sd=60&sb=&sn=&pt=4&pq=1&rf=32.75&pd=179.04&pw=2&pa=239.3&pp=100

It’s not too far off your figures, just rounded up a bit on the port H x W and I can live with that depth size, hope it sounds good! Will be building the box in the next 1-2 weeks.

Thank you for your help 👍🏼

Hopefully it sounds good. It's usually a good idea to model the box on a program like WinISD or Hornresp or something like that.

Man I wish that port could be shorter.

Hello Dafaseles,

Thought I’d come back with an update on the box build. Made the box and installed the 2 x 12” Pioneers with great results! Sounds ace 👍🏼 the bass is deep and musical as I would have wanted. For a $60 sub these thump! Let a number of people hear the set up and they were just as impressed and suprised.

Rattles the hell out of my car and rear view mirror with vibrations apparant, but that’s just the car. Subs still need some running in time and loosening up, so it will only get better.

Everyone has been impressed with the box design, so full credit to you dafaseles. The ‘entry’ level Pioneer’s have made people think you don’t need to go top of the range all the time. The build quality does show though on these subs, they do feel ‘cheaply’ built. I have previously run many mid-high end subs in the past, which have sounded better no doubt covering more frequencies better -  mainly a few single W6’s, W3’s, ID Max, Hertz, DD’s and many more. But hey, for the price, brilliant. But clearly down to the box design. Thank you 👍🏼
