help fellas, the Hoe died today and left me stranded

Ok my beloved 2001 chevy tahoe decided to die while i was in the middle of nowhere today.  I was stranded for 3 hours before a tow truck came and that included giving a stranger my ATM card and having them buy me gas.  I was low on gas but my fuel light didnt come on so i figured id make it, i had about 15 miles to go to get to the next gas station.  Well it acted like it ran out of gas and i thought that was the problem.  I put 2 gallons in (the VERY kind stranger came back :) ) but to my dissapointment it still wouldnt start.  So now i know i didnt run out of gas.  So stranded with my 2 young sons i was and barely a cell signal.  $190 dollars later, Im just now getting home and im stessing hard can you guys give me some advice on this please.  Fuel filter?  Sounds like it to me...where the hell is it and is it easy to change?  Fuel pump....i hope it aint that but if it is, where is that thing and how do i get to it? 

Theres one more small part to the story.  After getting home i got it into the garage and before i went in i said F it and tried to start it.  It fired right up.  Ran like crap till i got the rpm's up, then ran good.  2 minutes later it died again..

anyway if anyone here has some input PLEASE help a brotha out!! I posted this on other forums too i need all advice i can get.....im not feelin too good about my Tahoe right about now :(

same shit just happen to me fuel pump i bet. i just got mine changed i did what you did put all that gas in and it wouldnt start. i thought it was other things its the fuel pump. once you let it sit it will fire up then die. oh changing it is a piece of cake if your good wit cars got mine changed in like a hour cost me 150.00 wit labor. oh when you get that done make sure they look at your fuel lines get them knocked out. you dont want them damn things going bad after you fix a problem :^

my buddy said that for gmc the fuel pump is in the gas tank and its a bitch to get to, u gotta drop the fuel tank and take the pump out. my buddy's work truck (standard chevy 1500) went out and it cost $800 to replace (the pump was $300). the fuel filter he said is up by the intake...he thinks.

that sucks mang :V

i hate car trouble, especially when its relatively new...

i likes me some audio stuff...

well steve you have to drop the tank, to check it you will need to get a fuel pressure gauge, and check what the pressure is at the rail.

the pump is in the tank, takes about 2 1/2 hour to change... you are more than capableof changing it.

you can call me if you need advice, i have done it " a few times"..lol

and i planned on coming up there tommorowtoo.. but had to change plans last minute so i can go to dmv..

well i will talk to you later.

thanks for the input fellas.....im just now gettin to settle down but tomorrows gonna be crazy trying to figure it all out.  Im takin the day off work.  Fuck it, when my car is sick so am i.   :D

Yo Steve!

1st off, I'm no "master Mechanic" or ASE certified yet (still waiting on test results), but I have worked at AutoZone for lil over 6years and IMO it's the filter, the pump, or both.

Rays right. Change the filter 1st and fuel pump strainer-when you run down to Empty you start to suck all the particulates and metal shards (microscopinc even) and general "crap" that is in all gas good or bad, all that which is normally "settled" on the tank floor gets pulled into the fuel pump strainer which is normally a "pre-filter" small cotton-sock lookin thing (in tank of course) that protects the pump from junk gettin in it. If you run down to E and get ALL that bottom dwelling junk caked up on the outside of the strainer it can block pressure and form a "one way valve" that may settle after the truck is off for a while and sits. then the suction/flow of gas pulls the junk back over the face of the strainer and blocks it hence the "fired right up, ran like it was choking, then died altogether.

Then like RAY said to make sure that THAT was the only problem and not something like the pump just being dead or the fuel pump relay not kickin the pump on, reinstall it all and check pressure at the fuel rail (should be TBI on ur truck) if you still got nothing try the relay 1st (cheaper) then the pump.
