no, underpowering your subs doesnt damage them. What do u think happens when you turn down the volume :D

a sub is blown either from mechanical or thermal failure. Failure shouldnt happen at RMS...even if clipping.

The reason why you hear stories of people blowing there say 1000rms sub off of a 400rms amp is they end up trying to get more output from there amp than it is capable of, by turning the gains and bass boost all the way up, as well as all the settings on the deck maxed out, and what they end up doing is sending a big ol square clipped signal to the sub, which ends up damaging the sub.

Someone correct me if I am wrong please.

Edit: To finkster, Wouldnt a clipped signal cause your coils to heat up, more than normal? And this would cause you coil to possibly fail.

if you try and push the amp to far and clip it may damage the woofer on less power, but a clean signal at or below RMS should not damage the woofer in a controlled environment. If the sub would "blow" with to little power it would smoke every time you turned the music down. :D
