you dont need the heat shield... but it makes the cold air intake pointless. the goal is to bring in the cold air and not the hot.

most pf the power that is gained comes from all the crap in the intake track being removed when I put an intake on my 98 s10 with the 2.2 a ton of stuff got pulled out most of it you would never know was in there most of it Id say was resonaters to quiet the truck down every vehicle is diffrent tho my Silveado with the 4.3 dosent have alot of crap in the air path tho it dose have a small resonater right next to the throttle body

If your Taco dosen't have a mechanical fan. uldn't notice a difference. the only reason most have a heat sheild is to block the turbulance from the fan. The heat is sometimes and issue but mostly they are for keeping fan wash at bay, and stopping irratic Idle (SP CHK). Just my experience and $0.02
