The difference in sound between small and big subwoofers:

There is no difference in sound, only in loudness.

Bigger subs don't play lower nor do smaller subs play "tighter" or they can't hit the "lows".

Maybe put this somewhere? :peepwall:

Well the reproduction is highly dependent on the box, but you can't say the response won't change. While the "loudness" does increase with cone area, the response of the entire driver does too. Different size subs have different electrical and mechanical compliance, different resonant frequencies, and different sensitivities, so putting them in a similar enclosure to the smaller sub WILL in fact yield a different sound.

I have already explained how higher SD will yield more air movement, but technically a general trend is that the FS of a certain model will go down as the size gets bigger. That means the "bigger" sub will play lower in the correct environment, but there is no reason to ever think that 10s or 12s won't stop your heart with subsonic frequencies.

1. fi btl with stiff spider pack... lets say it moves 14mm one way excursion straight from FI, new

2. fi btl with stiff spider pack... lets say it moves 18mm one way excursion after 2 weeks of use... no change from original settings, just the stiff spiders loosening

the questions:

which sub will be better for daily music.... 2

which sub will disipate the heat better.... 2

which sub will displace more air.... 2

so how then does break-in (softening of spiders) not "matter"

Well you kind of took it the wrong way. It was said that the physical properties DO change the acoustic reproduction (i.e. Q, FS, RMS, XMAX, etc..), but it's a question of power handling. The only reason people ask about break-in is for handling higher than rated power right off the line. However, should you take the time to break-in a sub, overall SQ may be slightly higher after suspension has loosened.
