It should explain that in the instruction sheet, but... The stud that is in direct contact with the aluminum housing is always going to be the ground, (obviously) otherwise you would have a gigantic arc when you touch a positive cable to it, as the entire housing is ground. You can always identify the positive battery connection, because the stud will always thread into a plastic insulator to insulate it from shorting to the housing.
