  1. Ditch the velociraptor. You get similar performance for less from the new 64mb cache lineup from WD. Save yourself some money.

Great case... I have used it for a few builds for my buddies. Lot's of room considering it's size... great cooling.

The onboard gpu will be fine... this chipset allows you to run hybrid crossfire. So down the road you can drop in a 5770 or so if you need more performance.

I also recommend going with the 1055T.. if you can wait get the 960T. Updated design process... great overclockers and very efficient.

I would also consider ditching the ram for some G.Skill. Better overall imo.

Also if your budget allows I would switch over to a corsair unit.

Do you already have a disk drive or are you reusing?

Already have a dvd burner, mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

A couple others have recommended the G.Skill as well. I'll look into that.

How does the higher cache help performance?

  2. couple of q's...... What are you going to use as a GPU? I hope not the built in GPU on that motherboard, cause it will suck! Secondly, instead of that 945 PII AM3 CPU, consider the new AMD X6's (the 1055T) is only another 60$ and will be a far better CPU....

I'm not looking for some high end gaming machine. I'm a normal user who will occasionally watch stuff on my computer.

The built in GPU (according to some reviews) works just fine for 720 and 1080p movies, which is all I'd ever use it for.

If I end up hating the video quality, then sure I could upgrade that later. I doubt that'll be the case, but you never know.

Basically anything is better than what I have now. I didn't really "cheap" out on anything, but I'm trying to do this on a decent budget.

  3. So my current desktop tower is 8 years old. Needless to say, it's a little tired. :)

With the help of some buddies on a different forum, we pieced this setup together. Basically I'm looking for any opinions.

Total after a couple instant rebates and some promo codes comes to $738.53 shipped.

This is my first computer build, so I'm pretty excited. :)

  4. I have two of those same yellow Craftsman clamps as well as a Fluke and they all read identical.

Hopefully I'll do my head-to-head tests next week and see if it's worth having the fluke 337 or not. I could resell it and buy 2 more craftsmans for the same price!

  5. I picked up an 800 amp, AC/DC, true RMS craftsman clamp meter off ebay for $61 shipped.

    Just like THIS one.

It also has peak hold so you don't have to be holding the meter to get readings.

Also, I snagged a fluke 337 off ebay as well (because i needed 2 clamp meters anyways), so when I get that one I'm gonna do a head-to-head comparison and see how accurate the craftsman one is.

So far though, the craftsman has been doing very well. The only thing I can complain about is that it gives "ghost" readings, meaning it's reading current even though it's not clamped around anything. But since it's so low (in the 10-15 amp area) it doesn't really affect my readings. Just annoying.
