  1. I didnt take any picts of the redo, just have another with grill cover on it. I use the online calculator Here to get my recommended port areas and lengths. I havent messed with DC subs so I will leave those recommendations to the experts. If you need a big aero just get some Sonotube from HomeDepot. Dont know if you have seen one of those Sonotube sub enclosures or not but you ought to search them up. I have never heard one in person but most everyone that has built one seemed pleased with them. Just a 12 dia tube 4-6 feet tall with a sub installed in the bottom basically. A little more work than that but you get the idea.

Yea i was thinking about a sonotube enclosure... so how do you cap the ends?? just make 2 round mdf cutouts to plug it then just glue andscrew the mdf through the tube from the outside ? using a few 1x2 braces to brace and hold the 2 pieces together on the inside?

  2. Heres my car sub home audio setup. 2 Rockford T1's (2 of assmans old subs) in a big ass box I got off eBay. The box was originaly 10^3 and tuned to 10hz with to TC1000's. Way to big for me to fit where I wanted it. I cut 14 inches off the back and reworked the whole box smoothing it all down and hitting it with gloss black and a custom job on the back. I have it tuned around 27hz +- . Big 10" pvc port on the side with 0 port noise. Run a Behringer EP2500 to power it.

It will shake the hell out of the whole house, is devastating with movies and sounds great with music. Mainly use it for music, jam in the house all the time.

I would say just go for it and see how you like it. Maybe even consider one of those Sonotube sub setups. You could place that behind the TV and have it fire down. Cheap and easy to make sub enclosure.

wow man.. very impressive! id be afraid my kitten would run through the port lol... more pics if ya got em... and since ppl on here know more about the specs of the lvl 3s than me, what dimensions and port tuning and length should i be going with>> like i said .. never done an aero

  3.

what it comes down to 40nbelow09 is what you really want out of it. If your comparing the final result there is NO way to tell unless you do both the Dc HT and the Option #2 shown. I think both will have very satisfying results with enough time put into it. if the woofs are just sitting then build a box! if you want a stand alone HT then build the HT that you want and save the DCs for parties (Flippn awesome to throw a party and have DCs thumpin in the corner)

    -Drew

yea man, its a tough call... is there anything i need to know when tuning a HT enclosure.. so if i decide to go with option 2 i dont make it sound like ass... Does it say in the specs of the sub what it recommends for enclosure size and tuning? sorry my pages arent loading very quick tonight

  4. everything from spiders to coil to cone to motor structure and gap geometry can effect the design and output of the woofer. That pictured woofer next to the DC will sound Very "Natural" where the Dc is designed to play artificial bass tons to music, so it will require a bit more effort to get that real natural infrasonic experience.

    -Drew

ahhh the geometry of woofers.... for $150 would it just be better to go with something like this? and how would a $400 DIY setup compared to a $400 big box sub sound .. Example of the klipsch sub 12 which shockingly i was impressed with .. So since i only really want to spend $400 , heres my options

  5. Yes, Generally your correct.

The reason i like the alignment described- is that my HT mid-bass is seriously lacking and if i get to big/low then i lose so much upper that i have a BIG hole between the mids and sub. I Jam it for TV as well and noticed MANY TV show intros have cool rolling lines that the sub brings out well above the 15-35hz range.

Basically, Test Test Test!! (And corner load!)

    -Drew

**after looking at the pic- If it were my room i'd have a vertical sub box behind the TV with the slot port on bottom shooting into the corner. just my .02c

funny you say that .. lol Yea it was a mess back there , but its 100x better now.. the sub now is actually on a 16" riser sub is firing at the back of the tv and the port is firing against the corner of the wall .. no other way reallly

  6. x2 I like your thinking Drew. There's just some movies that you'll be glad you have that super low tuning. I can't really hear anything below 20hz, but definitely feel it.

any worries about over excursion and bottoming out with 1000 watts tuned that low????...

Another thing .. what makes a HT sub so much better than a car sub.. what specs of the driver do you look at ... I took a pic of a sub i have and it sounds pretty good for what it is... hell of alot better than the DC , but cant figure out why... especially with the comparison...

    what do u think ..

  7. HT is a lot of preference.

I like my HT in a smaller box tuned low. if this were my setup- i'd do 3cuft @25hz with ~38-40sqin of port

For this idea, make a big box that has changeable volume and tuning!

    6cuft then cut to 5 then 4 then 3

then change your tuning from 28 to 25 to 18 in these alignments. I guarantee after this you will find an alignment suited to your taste and you'll learn about that particular rooms acoustics, corner load if possible.

    -Drew

newb HT question... Larger enclosures..... More boomy and louder

    smaller enclosure tighter and lower?

Im seriously lost.. i think the room acoustics of a house F@&k with me...

And why in your tuning did you go a little higher? i was assuming under normal tuning , that a HT setup tuned to 18-22 hz would peak around 38-40 .. which is room dependent i understand , buit as a general idea is this true?

  8. I think they'll do just fine in an HT setup. I definitely recommend tuning low like you're planning. My home sub is tuned to 20hz and with just a PE 275 watt plate amp it'll move your pant legs a little bit. Two DC 12s would definitely rock the house. Shouldn't cost much to whip up a nice box for them and try it out. You planning on aeroports?

of the probably 30+ enclosures ive built ive never done an aero... but i believe is a must if i do this

  9. Build the box for a HT purpose and it will sound VERY good.

I had a 15" lvl 3 in my room for a day or two ;)

    -Drew

I know these subs CAN sound good, but in HT HOW do you make it sound good... there basically in a car spl type enclosure tuned in the 30's.. When i put it in my buddies basement for testing it dropped out around 35 hz, Just got very loud and vibrated the shit out of everything... not to great for HT

So what im asking is can i tune a box that low.. possibly even lower ( i would like to tune to 18 hz or so ) with that much power still?? i know id have to tune it and keep an eye on the gains, cuz 1000 watts in my spl enclosure is alot better for these things than 1000 watts in a 18hz 6 cf HT enclosure..

I just dont wanna mess up the subs, nor do i want to waste time and money building these into a HT setup, if i could just buy one or 2 of those titanic subs i linked ,

  10. Ive been debating what to do with my lvl 3 12's for a while.. Sell them and upgrade , add a few more and do a wall , sell them outright, or to just keep them and attempt to make an enclosure for them for my HT... I know i know, they are not made for HT etc etc,,.. And i did actually put them in my buddies HT setup once.. He has a Amp that somewhere around 1k @4 ohms so it was perfect... but obviously sounded like ass... my old polk 10 sounded 10 times better and deeper than both of these things.. and i realize there in a near 4 cubic foot enclosure tuned to 34 hz but i thought they might work...

So my question is, if i got this amp ( http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.c...tnumber=300-808 ) And made an enclosure tuned to around 22-24 hz would it sound better, worse ... i have no clue.. ..?? I have built enclosures for years and have been a carpenter for 10 so i know what to do, i just need some guidance from rusty or someone who has tried this...

I know ppl who have put SS subs, tc sounds, soundsplinter subs etc in HT but they seem like they were more designed to be there than the DC stuff, no idea why... Im just debating because i do need a sub in my HT as now i have an all new 2009 5.1 setup but am really missing the low end..... If this will not work more than likely i will just keep the 1000 watt dayton amp and buy 2 of these 12s, http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.c...tnumber=295-404 or a single 15 http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.c...tnumber=295-420

    thoughts or suggestions???

  11. Good lookin Thorshamma

If you have any more questions post them up or shoot me a PM

Rusty is amazingly busy- sometimes the interweb minionz can help as well :D

    -Drew

thanks alot guys.. yea rustys pm'd me quick with #'s.. if i sell my lvl 3s on craigslist or something ,what should i put them out for?? $400 for the pair in the box?? Alot of people around here have no idea what DC is so thats why its hard to sell these without having people hear them

i know its high but ppl here just dont know... they pay 500 for a pair of w3's,

i sold my old RE SX ythe same way.. put it on the local pages , and had ppl listen to it at a show.. sold it, for 300

the song " on the dancefloor " is the one being played on local radio now.. This version on myspace is not as good as the cut for the radio, but still slams pretty hard
