  1. The alternator and battery could be upgraded, but, your still not addressing the problem directly.

The problem is the bass hits, drops the voltage and lights dim.

Another option is to see what the voltage is dropping to and use a dc to dc converter to run the headlights, rated to work from 9v to 15v. This will counter the bass hit-voltage drop atleast for the lights so if it hits 10v on a bass note, it's still making the same light as it does at 14v. I've noticed my HID's don't dim, so I pinched that idea from them.

No converter is 100% efficient so there is a small overhead trade-off.

If I am having a voltage drop when the bass hits, wouldn't the 2nd battery help with that? Also, what size fuses would I need on both ends of the cable from the front to back battery?

  2. some people run a negative to the back and then some just ground the 2nd battery to the chassis .... then some run negative to the 2nd battery and ground it to the chassis for overkill. either will work. i have a run of positive and negative from the 1st to 2nd battery, i sit at 15.5 with my setup, mimimum voltage drop.

Ok great. I know I need to run my amps to the back battery and my next question is this. Is the front battery going to be used strictly for the car and inside the car like A/C, heater, etc.? And will the amps be strictly running off the back battery by itself? How is the load spread across both batteries?

  3. So I've been reading comments from a few threads below regarding how to install the 2nd battery and I just want to confirm this. I need to run a cable from the positive on the front battery to the positive on the 2nd battery? Then I need to run the negative from the front battery to the negative on the 2nd battery OR I can just ground the 2nd battery in the back of the car? Then I should fuse it on both ends near the front and back batteries?

  4. You say that you are going to be upgrading your system in the future. What is the time frame, next month, year, how long? If its not going to be in the next couple of months, I wouldn't really worry about getting a upgraded alternator. Get a second battery and put it in the back. That should suffice for the time leading up to your future upgrades, and at that point, you can get a bigger alternator. 1000 watts is not much, I myself am running close to 2000 watts on a stock 90 amp alt and a yellow top in the rear (soon to be replaced) and didn't have light dim when I have regular halogens in. If there is an option for a little bigger factory style alternator for that engine, might want to go with that also to save yourself some money.

That is what I would do.

So you're saying you had 2k watts on a 90 amp alt, a battery under the hood, a yellow top in the trunk and your lights were fine?

  5. I'm still on my quest to stop my damn lights from dimming. It's an 03 Honda Civic with a puny 70 amp alt. I have a small system that is listed in my sig. Total it's around 1k watts. I've got a Optima yellow top under the hood and the big 3 done in 0 gauge wire. I'm using this amp kit for wiring. http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/product_details.asp?cat_id=5&series_id=41&family_id=86&item_id=108362&locale=en_US&p_status= A small part of the problem is it's only a 4 gauge run from the battery to the distribution block and then 8 gauge from the distribution block to the amps. It's only a few feet but 8 gauge nonetheless.

I will eventually upgrade the wiring but right now I think the problem is bigger than that. I think I need a h/o alt or I need a 2nd battery. Once I get this situation fixed, down the road I'd like to replace the subs and sub amp and go bigger. So I'm assuming I should just get the alternator and that will fix my problem now plus give me room down the road to add more power?

    What do you guys recommend?

  6. ^There you go right there.

Imagine it being 10 oclock and the little hand on the clock pointing to the 10. Turn the nob on the amp until it looks like the little hand pointing to the 10 on the clock.

  7. I spoke too soon. Punk ass Arnold decided to use his last appeal and appeal the judge's decision. So now the furlough's are back on. The case is going to the highest court and this will be the final decision. Several other unions took Arnold to court and won and Arnold appealed every one of the decisions as well. All the cases went to the highest court and Arnold lost. So the outcome of this case shouldn't be any different. Just need to wait it out.

  8. I went to a shop here in Sac about 10 years ago, Audio Express, and bought a low level Alpine for my wife's car just so she could listen to cd's. They're motto is home of the $1 install. You have to buy the product from them of course. So I paid $1 for the install and they did a decent job. A few years later we went to sale the car and my wife was used to the deck so I wanted them to take it out so we could put it in her next car. I figured it would be the same $1 to pull it out and another $1 to put it in the new car. Nope. They wanted to charge regular price since it wasn't a new purchase. We ended up just leaving the deck in the car and got a new one elsewhere.
