Cant decide between the 12" Fi BL's or the AUDIOQUE hdc3 12's

I just made the switch to a ported box its much louder than the sealed but i think it can be even more louder if i set my gain a little higher. ive heard stories of that you gain damage your drivers if u set your gain to high in a ported box. The question is, it safe to turn the amp level up a tad bit from the half way mark ?
