  1. Alright here are some notes before I ask my question.

    1) Headunit does not clip at 62/62 with both the 40hz and 1khz 0 db track.

    2) Sub amp gain is currently set with -5db track.

    3) I am aware that higher gain = worse signal to noise ratio.

Ok, so here begins my curiosity.

Currently, I have been happy with the -5db track for my music settings and what I play, but I got curious. Since I have a gain knob on my kicker amp (which I know only turns it down from max/set point of gain), I wanted to be able to mark the knob for different track settings. (-10, -5, etc). So I decide to try to set this up...didn't work. My gain knob does NOTHING to affect the DD-1. It reads the same. It does not make any sense to me. If I switch the tracks to lets say 0db, the DD-1 responds and shows distortion through the amp. (I should have noted I am measuring through the amp, since the headunit is already set) So out of curiousity, I turn down the volume on the deck instead until the distortion light goes away. Ok so volume 57, with my gain set with the -5db track at the sub amp.

So I am wondering, am I putting too much emphasis on the whole situation. The whole point of gain is to match voltages correct...so from what I discovered, does it make more sense that the volume knob is the most critical piece to the equation once gain is set? I hope I am making sense.

The whole reason I wanted to set my bass knob, was so I could turn down the gain when I play songs that are close to 0db in bass. I just wanted notches marked. But now I am thinking, overlap is important, but am I technically "distortion free" on a 0db track until volume 57, even though I set overlap with the -5db track?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  2. what year f150? if you have a year like mine, you can do what I did for my box/setup.

If you are stuck on that box, maybe use the SD series?

I am thinking about buying two SA 10's and putting them in my Ford F150 crew cab pickup. My box is made with a maximum mounting depth of 6.25 inches with a subwoofer that it's magnet is no bigger than 6.5 inches. That means the sub will only have 0.25 inches of clearence between it and the surface of the box. Do you guys think this will cause a problem?

there will be no clearance 6.25 - 6.5= -0.25, the sub will stick out of box

do you have the box already (prefab) or are you going to make you?

another thing to look at it net volume of box, this will also restrict some of you options

    btw SA-10s are 6.0 inch mounting. SA-12s are 6.5

  3. it would be pointless for an organization to give you tones that arent 0db. why would they want their competitors to meter lower?

sure you could use the sub level on your headunit and tune 0db at like +15 and play -5 and see where it distorts on the sub level (12 or whatever, idk) then do the same for 10 and 15. other than that, i cant think of anything for you to do

Its the other way around kranny. For burping the tone would be the loudest, needing the least amount of sub level. Basically what tone you use for music would be where sub level would be at max, and becuase 0dB tones are louder, you would turn down sub level to for undistorted/clean burp power.

i am definitely gonna set up my bass knob like this!

  4. You should use the sub volume on your deck.

Then your amp could be turned all the way down.

arent most decks like pioneer centered around 0db with the sub volume? are u saying push it all the way to +6 then set the gains? then that would defeat the purpose of making -/+ adjustments for bass quiet music?

  5. tool worked great!

cept i messed up and forgot to turn on my hp filter again...so almost blew the door speakers lol. im sure they are a little damaged..

def gained on the subs to the ear! and i only used -5db tone. I dont trust going any more attenuated!

But it is all set up right and my ears hurt from a few songs from my SA-10s!

(while my amp is working LOL)

  6. How did you ground your amps?

straight to the frame. and at the same spot. grinded down nice. then siliconed over to protect.

the more and more im playing with it it seems like the amp but im still not sure.

found out my headunit doesnt do jack for preout voltage until almost to the end of the volume knob from testing.

  7. still havent tested the headunit thing yet, but it was weird...cause as soon as i gave my headunit more volume.....and brought it back down..the bass at the same volume level where i started was higher...

so does that equate to the headunit or something faulty in the amp?

but then again...i turned the sub output on and off as well...so who knows =/

  8. adjust the amp accordingly for the ipod test?

and what you mean not get the full potential at 2 ohms from the RF CP?

I'll see if I can't find the thread where this was discussed. Others will be able to explain it better than I can. Long story short, you don't get the full effect of constant power when run at 2 ohms.

    http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/88684-what-is-cp/

gotcha. well its like any amp imo..youll never get TRUE full rated power. as long as it pushes the rms at the right ohm rating I am fine right? should i not bother with this amp or what?

on a side note, why 4 gauge wire? when most other amps I seen for this rms need 0 gauge?

adjust the amp accordingly for the ipod test? readjusting the gain u mean?

and what you mean not get the full potential at 2 ohms from the RF CP?

Turn the ipod down. You wont have to adjust the gain as long as you dont crank the ipod up to run the amp hard.

    alright sounds like a plan.
