  1. Just to touch a few things you said. Set your eq flat. Then set your amp gains. This way say some songs have a shitload of bass. You could THEN turn your bass down -1 or -2 and then songs with less bass or whatever you could keep at 0 since that is where you set your gains at. Set everything flat. Set the gains. Then if something needs adjusted go - on the eq. Turning anything up is very likely to cause a clipped signal. And also. Don't turn your radio volume up to 40/40. Try 32/40. Also by doing this. If some songs are a little quieter then other you can go to 33-34 and get a little of the difference back. Once you start cranking stuff stuff doesn't play right and doesn't play for long.

The EQ on the head unit? It only has presets as far as I know. It's at flat, always has been. It's the only one that has decent treble and doesn't boost the bass ridiculously

I've already set my amp gains and they are right where I want them. The idiots at the shop had them turned way too high and it was overpowering the highs.

Nobody read that the phone is at 12/14?? Doesn't that count for something? If I turn the phone to 13 or 14 it DOES distort the highs.

Anyways, toot it and boot it WAS clipping. I opened it up with audacity and it hit the red - btw, does it stay red the whole song if it clipped once? Would it be ok to just walk away, come back in 3 minutes when the song is finished playing and find the red marker there still, indicating the song has clipped at one point or another?

And where can I get an oscilloscope, what does it do, how much are they and how do I use it?

  2. you shouldnt be running your headunit at 40/40 on volume. its more then likely clipping your speakers especially with the treble at 5/7. just a little fyi. but to the topic, like skittles said, some songs are at different amplitudes. if i really favor one song, like waka flocka no hands i run it thru windows media player on scope mode to see if its clipped, that songs clipped as f*ck btw! but the songs youre playing are more like 40hz iirc

Like I said it's stable and if I notice it clipping I do turn it down. But that rarely happens with the phone at 12/14, which is why I do it, so it's like having the head unit at 30-35. And would like to add again that the sub is turned down pretty good and the speakers are 40w and 50w rms each and only getting 20w rms if that.

But what do I do in audacity? yeah the little waves are cool but that doesn't tell me anything...

What options do I go to?

  3. Going to attempt to fix electrical interference with the amp.

I'm thinking it's the RCA's ran next to the power wire.

So I can either run the RCA's on the passenger side (easy to do, I know how to do it, for the most part)

Or find another hole on the passenger side for the power wire (which will give me about 5-8 more feet of wire)

The only problem I had with that was I was not able to figure out how to run the power wire down the passenger side.

    does anyone know?

There IS a hole but it seems very hard to get to as it's got the firewall stuff right next to it, making it nearly impossible to push anything through, and I can't seem to see anything if I put my head under the hood, or under the car.

Also, would the remote wire cause any interference?

I only notice anything when I hit the brakes, at which point, the amp cuts out for a second but even with the brakes on it will kick back on and stays on (while driving) and if I look at the sub, it flexes and bottoms out when I hit the brakes, even with the lights out and engine running.

I figured it's either the big 3 (lack of it) or the power wire/remote ran next to the RCA, and since I want to do the easiest first, decided to try the power/RCA first.

  4. toot it and boot it hits the hardest so far.

    My settings are:

    gain a little above half

    punch eq off completely

ported box built to spec of sub tuned to 30hz

    phone @ 12/14 volume through 3.5mm

bass on head unit all the way down (-7/-7)

    treble +5/+7

no sub control on head unit

I turn the head unit to 40/40 and it's always stable.

Anyways, toot it and boot it hits the hardest, second is beamer benz or bentley and third is like a g6

Do these songs have close to 30hz in the bass line?

Is there a program or something I can use to analyze that myself?

Possible to boost it on songs that don't hit that hard?

Any ideas/suggestions or anything else very welcomed by anyone wondering the same or w/e

  6. my speaker amp takes 8 guage.. (will probally use 4guage cut at ends to fit...) so ill probally end up just running the wires straight from the battery to the amps instead of using a distributer block.

Why not run less of the expensive stuff and use a distributor block to branch into the cheaper wire? I mean $5-$50 for a distributor is not much. It will make the system a lot better and it won't be ghetto like you plan on doing it.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing RIGHT

  7. Is there a way to see what frequency the bass hits on songs?

like a bass frequency analyzer or something?

I was playing toot it and boot it and it's the loudest song I've played yet.

second is beamer benz or bentley and like a g6

would be great to understand why

box should be tuned to 30hz if the guy did it right but I don't really understand what that means

  8. yep, because the cold weather makes it harder for the batteries to output power. i totally forget what actually happens internally (damn memory) but thats why your car cranks slower in the winter than the summer.

My jimmy idles at 2k instead of 1k...I just realized this 2 days ago.

It's about 20C out. Something about more air getting in = better performance or the engine trying to heat itself up? idk

going to be watching the amp though from now on, thanks for this thread

  9. Hey guys, I've got a 2000 chevy s10 extended cab with a full system already installed, with a pioneer 8200 head unit. One question about this HU first... I've already bypassed the unit, but I cant get the right file type to get it to play a video! What file type have you guys converted to (On macs) to get your pioneer head units to play videos?

Anyways... I want to keep my head unit in the factory location, but I want to add in a nice big touchscreen mac mini under the dash, right in the middle of the cab. I've looked around a lot, but I just can't find the right type of monitor for this job. It needs to be a touchscreen, that can I can use to control my mac, and thats about it... I just need to make an MDF enclosure for the monitor and the mac mini, and make it all look pretty... Please send me some ideas, and cool things to get the most out of this project!

Do you want to play video from the head unit or from the mac?

For the head unit, you can either lookup the info on the head unit or just convert to every video file possible and try each one, which is what I did.
