  1. How would a carpenter square help you make straight cuts? You need a guide too.

I've of just cutting of a length of mdf, and using that edge as a guide. Of course you'd have to do the rest of your cuts from the other end of the board.

  2. so are rip guides better because I already have a circular saw. But the table saw was like 80 buck and a craftsman it was on craigslist

Honestly a long straight edge (long level, piece of aluminum, etc.) and a couple c-clamps works just as well as a rip guide.

Table saws are very useful too though, for smaller cuts, 45's, and a few other things. So I'd still get one if you can afford it. Just make sure works well.

  3. it says to have the sub sonic filter at 30hz, i have mine at 25hz.. is that ok or should it be set to 30hz

    What are you tuned to?

the lpf is set to 110-115 and im pretty sure that is what it calls for. is this to high? i fill like it should be set to 80hz

What what calls for? And that is pretty high. Set it to wherever your mids drop off. You can play with it till it sounds good.

  4. Anyways, does power/ground wire size matter? and why?

-Yes. I believe it's Kirchhoff's Law, the same amount of current will be flowing through the positive wire as the negative (ground) wire.

Should you use speaker wire for power wire?

-Perhaps if the wire is decent, and the amp is VERY low power (and you know what you're doing).

What is the purpose of the gain on an amp?

-To match the output of the head unit to the output on the amp.

Can you still have distortion when using a LPF?

-Yes. An LPF filters certain frequencies. Doesn't really affect distortion.

Can you properly tune an amp without knowing where your head-unit distorts?

    -Not really.

Can you send a clipped signal to a subwoofer?

    -Yes.

    What is a clipped signal?

-Hard to explain if you don't have a decent background in physics. But this:

    tweak_clipped.gif

Should you play a song farrrrrrrr below tuning?

    -No you should not.

Do voltage & amps matter when powering an amp?

-Yes. Not sure EXACTLY what you mean, but you need to keep your votage high enough, and you need to make sure your power wire can carry enough amps.

Can an average human determine 1% distortion?

    -Probably not.

Do acoustics come into play when talking about loudness of a setup?

-Yes. Sound waves are crazy, man.

Can you under-power a subwoofer even if "Scoped" or using DD-1?

-Yes, your amp might distort at 500w. But your sub might handle a lot more.

Is ported different than vented & port-holed?

    -No.

Does an amp turn DC current into AC current?

    -Yes.

Are kicker amps the only amps that do rated power?

-No. There are PLENTY of amps that do rated.

Do ohms matter when connecting subwoofers?

-I would argue that impedance is the single most important (and first) thing you should consider when connecting subs to an amp.

    Does wire size increase efficiency?

-Yes. Everything has resistance, even wire. So some power is lost through it. The thicker, the better (less power lost).

Why don't washer/dryers/dishwashers/microwaves use massive wire if they have 120v & not just 12v?

-WATTS=VOLTSxAMPS so, with higher voltage, you can have less amps and get the same wattage. Wire is rated to handle amps, not volts

  5. it was either the -10db or -15db track. i did it just like steve showed it in the video using the dd-1 with a line driver so i think it was -15db. funny thing is i metered today with an audiocontrol meter and i know their a little off of a term lab but i did a 142.6db @ 50hz sealed on the dash and i knew something didnt seem right. but i felt a little better when we metered a dakota with 4 audiopipe 15s in a wall thats a sealed box on a 3000watt amp and he did a 139db @ 45hz sealed on dash.

I don't know about a line driver, but you're generally supposed to use the -5db or even 0 to be safe.

  6. You're right, each side should be half of the width of the vertical part.

Which track did you use when setting your gains?

I could be wrong, but I don't think your port can cause smelly coils. Your box can only control what your subs are doing mechanically, but your subs are producing too much heat, so it has to be either clipping or overpowering. Again, could be wrong.

  7. Rule #4....STFU unless you have something intelligent to add!

Dont be a fucking twat. you are on a car audio forum. I was agreeing with another member that you are not looking in the best place for legal advice, any numb nut on here could say they are a lawyer, or think they know what the fuck they are talking about and give you bad info and get you screwed even more. So on that note, good luck, hope whoever you listen to isnt full of shit. Dick.

Rule #5 welcome to SMD where members post dump on threads while no knowledge of topic

And really, how the fuck do you know? I myself was sued for copyright infringement a couple years ago, and beat the case. So no, I have no clue.

  8. Alright so here's where it's at now. Unfinished, not even bolted down yet.IMG_2011.jpg

    IMG_2010.jpg

Literally the last screw I put it, and the ONLY split piece. Went too deep with the damn countersink bit. Oh well, nothing that can't be fixed. Next time, I'll try to buy a shit load of clamps, and not use screws. I honestly didn't want to use screws at all, but clamps aren't cheap.

Unfortunately no pics of the build process. Didn't want to get mdf dust and glue all over my sister's camera... Not missing much anyway, it's a pretty simple box.

    IMG_2012.jpg

Here's my current head unit. It's whatever, only cost 60 bucks, and distorts at like 43 out of 45 IIRC (but I set the gains at 30, because that's where my speakers start to sound shitty.) Would love to get an Alpine, but that's the last thing on my list at this point.

    IMG_2013.jpg

Here's the speakers I'm running, and these are the ONLY ones I have at this point. They actually sound pretty decent, but definitely do not keep up with the bass. At least not on head unit power.

Yes there's dust everywhere. That's kind of how it is out here lol. I took a few more pics, but I need to clean my car a bit and retake them :pardon:

Almost forgot to mention. Took a drive to wal mart today and went the long way so I could listen to it. I am FULLY impressed by this thing's quality and loudness, especially for only 300 watts. Beats the hell out of my Boss 12's on "1200 watts" of power acoustik power. Seems to have a nice frequency range too from what I listened to. Some day, I'll have to find a nice empty place and really test it out, and possibly get vidz.

  9. I don't think that I will set my gains that low, it makes sense for you thought because the IVX series are rated at 300wrms right? I know the VVX series is rated at 600wrms but I'll see if I need to even have my gains set that high

Yeah mine's only rated for 300. If yours can go to 600, might as well go as high as you can right?

Have you built yours yet? Would love to see the build log.
