  1. I just built a 4h order and its best to do a removable port so you can play around with the tuning until you find the right tuning for what you are trying to achieve. I thought tuning the ported side higher would result in a higher SPL score but it doesn't. So I would suggest you start out around 45-50hz tuning and go from there. From my testing so far I gained 3db going from a 60hz tuned port(No port plug) to 49hz tuning with the plug in. Now I'm going to try a port tuned around 43hz and see if I still increase. Be patient and do alot of testing to see when and where you gain. My 2 cents

Thanks for the advice. I am definitely going to do the removable port. Would you go with a rectangle port or multiple round/aero ports? Also I will be using about 4k watts, is there anything I need to look out for or be aware of with that much power in a bandpass?

  2. if you're going for spl, we can't tell you port tuning, only a termlab can. start at 45 hz and change it up from there. go for 13-16 square inches of port area per ported cube.

Very true, but how does the tuning in a bandpass work. For straight ported boxes you tune below your frequency. It is the same for bandpass? I have heard the tuning should be higher like 50+. Thanks for the help

  3. Hello everyone, I am in the process of designing a 4th order bandpass box for my 2 Sundown Zv3 12s. This build will be mostly for SPL numbers but would still like to be able to play some music with it. I talked to Sundown and they said to use 1 cuft per sub for the sealed portion with a 3:1 ratio. So I have a box design with a sealed portion of 2 cuft and a ported portion of 6 cuft (all after displacement). The subs will be inverted firing into the sealed portion with the motor in the ported portion. The ported side will be 41" w x 20" d x 17" h (outside dimension). My question is about tunning. What should I tune the ported side to? Should I use a large rectangle port or round ports or aero ports? What port area per foot should I use? This is going in the trunk of my 2007 Ford Focus. The car peaks around 48hz. Any and all help will be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

  4. Just made the order last night, decided to go with a single 18" sundown Z v.3D2 for starters. Pretty excited to see how things work out, only 18" I have owned so far was a elemental designs 19ov.2 but that thing was a pos lol. Made this choice because it was only 40 bucks more then the 12" & over double the cone area. Now just need to find a nice amp to throw some juice @ 1 ohm to match.

The 18 Z v3 sound really good. I heard two in an Avalanche and man were they loud. As for an amp, I really enjoy my Powerbass XTA 5000d and the Sundown NS-1 is pritty awsome too.

  5. What kind of frequency did you pull that number at? Also what kind of box tuning? Just wondering. Also how do you like how the Z sounds for daily? I really loved how the rd audio alpha sounded, it hit low to high bass with amazing precision and got pretty damn loud daily for a single 15. The z came across my mind a few times as well when I was looking through the sundown options.

It was @ 48hz in an SPL burp box. I also just got my music box installed with 1 Sundown 12" Z v3 and let me tell you it is amazing. On music I am doing a 149db. The sub sounds amazing and would recommend if for daily play all day long. It is so load on music that I just broke my passenger side mirror, just fell apart. :)

Im just not sure if the single 12" will be able to do those numbers high 20z - low 30hz range in a rex. Thing is wicked hard to make hit lows notes. I thought I did really well with the single 15 off the shitty planet audio amp but just wasnt enough to keep me happy.

  6. I would recommend going with 2 Sundown Z v3 12" subs facing up with one large aero port facing backwards. I am using one Z v3 12" in my ford focus trunk car on a PowerBass XTA 5000d and hit a 152.4 in the kick on ~3200 watts. These subs are great and will take whatever power you want to push to them. Just my two cents. :)
