RamenNoodles Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 I dont think you are quite understanding what an alternator actually does. You can sit at that voltage without being at that RPM level. What happens at 2k rms is the alternator pulley is spinning faster creating more amperage. At 2k rpm, your alt will be at its max output which is 200amps If you are just sitting there with your system off but car running, you will still sit at 14.4 volts, you dont have to be at 2krpm to do this. All that an alternator does is charge the battery. Your really do not want to rely on your alternator to keep supplying a battery. You want to have some sort of decent storage as a reserve. As your batteries begin to get low, that power created from the alternator will begin to be recharged into your battery(ies) If you havent done so already you should invest in a new battery under the hood.
