i wasn't gonna reply to this but if you have to ask then you should stick with Rated rms wattage

i was thinking leave the 12 sitting in the box in the hole and duck tape from the bottom of the sub to the bottom of the baffle so the sub doesnt free air. would that work?

XL's can handle upwards between 3k to even 4k. As long has it has room to breath at that power, dont wanna burn a voice coil lol

My lvl 4 15" is running on 2k . It barely gets hot. =D
