As you may know, I work for The Orthopaedic Institute. They sent a medical team to Haiti today to provide medical support to the injured people in the area of Port-au-Prince Haiti after the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010.

Dr. Rosenberg, Dr. Waters, Dr. Maxey and Dale McDilda from OSC left this morning for Haiti with the logistical assistance of Attorney General Bill McCollum, United States Senators Bill Nelson & George LeMieux. Further, with the generous assistance of the University of Florida Foundation, the medical team was able to use the Foundation’s plane to connect to the chartered flight to Haiti.

The medical team arrived in Haiti at approximately 3:45pm. The southern command has offered to assist with transportation to the areas in need of medical assistance. The group plans to meet up with civilian and military surgeons, who are already engaged in the relief efforts.

Dr. Maxey says “the ability to use our surgical skills to help relieve the suffering of the injured is a great privilege and this is an excellent opportunity to give back to those in dire need.”

Thank you to all of the employees (too many to name) that helped gather and distribute the medical supplies that accompanied the medical team to Haiti. Paula Smith, Tara Bahrey and Sarah Helms drove the supplies down to south Florida today to put on the flight to Haiti. We also want to thank anyone else who helped coordinate this mission and to those who volunteered but were not able to go on the trip.

The medical team plans to provide medical services for 7 to 10 days.

Dr. Rosenberg says, “fire fighters, police and military are the true heroes and always the ones running in when others are running away. This is a unique way for doctors to contribute in the same manner.”

If you are interested, you will be able to find updates on the medical team’s time in Haiti on www.twitter.com/toihealth. For every twitter follower we get by January 29th, The Orthopaedic Institute plans to make a monetary donation to American Red Cross for the relief efforts in Haiti; so if you are on twitter, please follow and spread the word and/or post the link on your Facebook page. Your participation will be greatly appreciated.

Information has already been disseminated on TV2O 11pm news yesterday and featured by The Gainesville Sun found at the following link: http://www.gainesville.com/article/2...heads-to-Haiti
