noiseycricket Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 i bought an alt and reg from a guy, for some reason theres a relay wired into the equation. REG has pos neg and field. if im correct pos goes to switched power, neg goes to ground (chasis) and field goes to back of alt. CORRECT ? Alt stoped charging and i wana bye pass the whole relay thing taking it out and away. Quote 4 I.A. Guest DC Power Rob Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 You have it correct... If there's a relay there it's either to turn on the reg, or it's there for the charge light. I've seen them done both ways. Make sure you have a relay on that regulator thats fused, or be damn sure and fuse it at 20a on the pos input. I've seen my fair share of fires caused by those regs in my days. Those regulators have twin 20A switches and if your rotor shorts and it's not fused, it's gonna make smoke (esp if it's on a Ford). If your alt's not charging, check the fld terminal for power with a DMM or a test light while the ignition is on. if it's got power on the field, your alt is dead. if there's no power on the field, you either have a bad reg or input wiring issues..
