What are your goals with your system ??? Are you running class A/B or class D power ???

I do not use test equipment to set my gains.

Inexpensive class D. Pioneer 9601 and 8604, trying to not have to buy an upgraded alternator for my son's Civic. The goal is to make it sound as good as possible.

....of the test track that the amp gain was tuned to? Is this statement alluding to that? "Track 3 will ensure maximum sound quality, Track 7 will result in a louder system, Track 5 is a compromise). Your choice."

Yes, drop the pellet into the closed barrel of the lug and heat it until it melts, then insert the cable into the molten solder.

Definitely use flux, and if the solder doesn't flow, add more flux. It's not necessary to sand the inside of the terminal so it's bright, you're chemically cleaning it with the flux.

I'm suprised that no one mentioned solder pellets for the big closed lugs? Or tin/solder pots for tinning wires? Tinned wires aren't always the answer though. If you twist em round and tin them for insertion into your amp outputs, you ultimately give up a lot of surface/transfer area versus a flattened cable, tinned or not. If you leave your twisted up cables bare, they flatten and spread out easier.
