  1. so for example the receiver my friend demoed the sub on didn't have any special outputs for subs (they were all the same). would this mean, basically, that i could run mah shit on any old receiver without much risk?
  2. Yes but the problem is that my subwoofer is way below the typical impedance of any home amp.
  3. I checked BestBuy, they have a very limited selection of receivers (that don't come prepackaged with speakrs, which I don't want). Just to confirm, a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver would not work? Because of a difference in impedance?
  4. I have a feeling the problem would be easier solved if someone sent me a message on AIM: MilesLPember
  5. But I'm just trying to figure out the two possibilities for a 2.1 system. So far I have figured this: 1. Receiver + Subwoofer Amplifier 2. Full range amplifier + Subwoofer Amplifier Are these the only two possibilities? I just need a straight up answer.
  6. So basically I need a sub amp and a receiver? Or would it be possible to power it all off the receiver, like my friend did when he was demoing the sub to me.
  7. Thanks for the help. So does this basically mean that I would only need one receiver, but I would need two amplifiers to run a 2.1 setup? And also to confirm that the difference in impedance between the speakers wouldn't mess up the receiver, even if it has 5.1 or 7.1 sound?
  8. The primary issue at hand here seems to be that the subwoofer is rated at 4 ohms while the desktop speakers are rated at 8 ohms.
  9. Yes that is exactly what I am getting at. I am trying to power a 2.1 system here.
  10. Ok so someone in another thread reccomended a sub amp. But would a sub amp be able to power my regular desk speakers too? Would it have enough channels? He reccomended: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.c...tnumber=300-804 What I said in the topic that got locked: "So, I have a 10 inch JL Audio at 4 Ohms, 150 RMS, as well as two desk speakers at 8 ohms, 50 RMS each. According to my techie friend, this will cause serious problems if I hook the system into a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver. He suggested a 2.1 receiver, but those don't really seem to exist. So, apparently, I need an amp that has a crossover (to separate the frequencies for the sub and speakers, right?). Also, I don't know if an amp with with more channels than I need would suffer the same problem as a receiver. Based on these facts above, can anyone recommend a good amp for me? I am in the dark right now, sorry. "
  11. So I just picked up that 10 inch JL Audio sub I posted on about a week ago. Now all I need is some kind of power for it; I don't really know what the difference is between a receiver and an amplifier. From what I can tell, a receiver is basically an amplifier with some kind of media reader (i.e. CD, DVD). Obviously, receivers are much more expensive per watt, and pretty much all of them are 5.1 or 7.1 sound, where I only need 2.1. Considering that I want to get the sound from my laptop, which would I be better off with, an amplifier or a receiver?
  12. I was referring to running it at 200 watts, which is 50 above the RMS. Do you guys think that will be okay? Also apparently the two regular speakers I'm getting have to go into the amp too. What kind of amp would allow me to hook up the subwoofer and the two speakers all at once; how would I be able to make sure that the proper wattages go to all the components?
  13. Nice man; does anyone know how hard this bangs on a real system? Just have headphones right now.
  14. I only have one Psyph song in good quality so I'm definitely looking forward to this!
  15. Yeah okay. I've decided upon a JL audio 10 incher. Pretty sure it's about 150 RMS, although I'll prolly run it at 200 or so. How should that be? It's already enclosed, buying it off a friend.
  16. I'll work on it lol. Idk but I might need something that I cud take out when the mom needs to go grocery shopping! LOL.
  17. Alright now I have a really weird question. Basically I don't have a car right now and my parents won't let me get subs in ours. What about having some kind of home subwoofer in a car? Like those Logitechs. I know it sounds weird but it's all I can do right now.
