  1. hahahah Sheena comparing to a gun sound is kinda tough to do.. and Tyler are you doing an aero ported box?! I think that's the amount of power I'm gonna give to my SA-12s!

This is so true. My truck does 159s pretty easily and to the ear it's not as loud as a gun but I remember reading in something from Kicker saying 140db was the same as a shotgun blast. I guess it's because of the frequency difference.
  2. If you want 3.5 CuFt per woofer you're going to have to go bigger. Those dimensions only leave you with 3 CuFt per woofer and that's assuming you're only using a single layer of .75" wood and also does not include port discplacement. Generally woofers want 12-16 SqIn of port area per CuFt of net airspace though.

  3. What is the newest sundown amp model? I'm looking to power two SA-12's. I saw the SAZ-1200 and SAX-1200 and other SA amps at 1200 and am wondering which is the best/newest! I figure X is before Z in the alphabet, so SAZ is newer..

The first line on the 1200 page reads "The SAX-1200D is the successor to the SAZ-1000D model" so I think it's safe to assume the SAX is the newest version. You might want to consider something a little bigger though. The SA series woofers are very underrated so you might be doing better with a SAZ-1500D.
  4. it would be pointless for an organization to give you tones that arent 0db. why would they want their competitors to meter lower?

sure you could use the sub level on your headunit and tune 0db at like +15 and play -5 and see where it distorts on the sub level (12 or whatever, idk) then do the same for 10 and 15. other than that, i cant think of anything for you to do

It would be pointless for sure but I could see them saying most music is recorded at -5 so lets put -5 tones on the disc. They wouldn't be doing it because they wanted their competitors to meter lower but more because -5 is the norm for music. You'd probably be surprised at how silly USACi is. I mean you can meter with the doors open. How many people actually drive around with their doors open?
  5. Ahh... Ok, you don't happen to know if the tones on the USACi disc are 0dB, do you? They won't let you use anything else for the burp classses. I wish there was another organization down here, USACi is so squirrely with their rules.

The reason I was going to use the -15 track is because the manual for the DD-1 says use track 7 for a louder system. I guess I just took that as meaning it would be the best numbers when metering.

    The USACI tones are 0dB

I understand your logic because the wording is vague, but I'm suggesting the safer/proper solution

You would play the -10dB/-5dB track with sub level at max clean setting, then play 0dB and turn the sub level down until its clean also. When burping use the lower sub level, and maybe 1 click higher to see if a little clipping helps.

Gotcha, I honestly thought it was the other way around from reading the manual. Thank you very much you have been very helpful.
  6. you would always want to use 0db for burping. so then tune your amps for a 0db tone. you're making this more complicated than it has to be.

if you're so worried about fucking shit up, retune everything for whatever you will be doing. -10 for daily, 0 for comps, etc. there is no need why you should use -15 imo.

I don't know what I use for burping because I HAVE to use the USACi CD. I know I would want to use 0dB but It's not my choice. The USACi cd could be 0dB or -15dB. I have no idea where they recorded it that's why I asked if Decaf knew...

Again, I'm not worried about "fucking shit up". I beat the crap out of my last set of subs for over 2 years and never had a problem. My new subs use the same coil and have way better cooling so I'm VERY comfortable in saying that they won't let go anytime soon and I'm in a wheelchair so it's not really easy to "retune" everytime I want to do something different. Honestly, it seems kinda dumb to even consider that if all you have to do is change 1 setting on your head unit to accomplish the exact same thing.

  8. Like I said, I'm not worried about anything. I'm just curious. I think you are reading to much into the question. I pretty much only play my subs at competitions & I feel that I need to use track 7 to set my gains because it is going to give me the best #s on the meter. What I plan to do is use track 7 to set the gains with the sub level control on the radio all the way up for metering then put in the -5 dB track on and turn down the sub control until the DD-1 says it's clean and use that setting for demos. So basically, I'll only be burping with the -15dB setting and any music I'd be playing would be with the -5dB setting.

Decaf, I understand that every amp will be different that's why I was asking an "about" percentage. I just didn't see where anyone had done a similar test on any amp. I pretty much only play the songs that you have modified when I demo because I know they are clean.

  9. You need to worry about clipping the signal before even considering how much THD you have. If your main concern is overpowering your subs then I would stay far away from using -15db to set your gains. That setting gives you the least amount of forgiveness of any of the settings.

I'll take that as an "I don't know"...
  10. THD will be the same since the light turns on at 1%...it ONLY matters which attenuated tone you use. the ONLY difference between the tones is what volume they're recorded at. thats it.

Yeah, but if you use the -15dB track to set your gain at 1% then play music that is recorded at -5 or 0dB the THD will go up correct? My question is, how much will it go up by switching?

And MrSkippy the DD-1's not going to keep me from overpowering the subs, just give me a rough idea how much I'm overpowering them by telling me about how much over the <1% THD Jake used when he rated my amps that I really am.

I hope that helps. I confused myself a little there. lol

  11. any particular reason you are set on using the -15db setting and are worried about THD? If you are worried about noise in your system, the last thing you want to do is have your gain cranked up.

I'm not worried about noise in my system. I'm more worried about over powering my woofers... My woofers are almost never on. It's not really feasible tome to be driving around with ~160dbs beating on your brain.
  12. Thanks for the replys, but that's kinda not what I'm asking. I already know I'm going to set my highs amp with the -5dB track and my sub amps with the -15dB track. I was more asking in terms of amp ratings. Like my old Orion amps put out 100 WRMS at .0005% THD and my SAZ-3500Ds are rated at 750 WRMS at <1% so I was curious if I'd be seeing more considerably more power by using the -15 dB track. I just don't know if I'd be seeing 10% THD or 80% THD. So I was asking if anyone had set up their amp with the -15 dB track and then tested to see what the THD was with the 0 dB or even the -5 dB track playing.

  13. I saw a video a few days ago showing how the DD-1 distortion light came on at 1% thd with the 0 dB track playing, I can't seem to find the vid to link to now but I'm sure enough people have seen it to know which one I'm talking about. Anyway, my question is what would the THD be if you set your gains using the -5dB, -10dB, and -15dB tracks and then turned your volume up to the highest clean signal? Sorry if this has been answered I searched around but couldn't find it anywhere.

  14. wow, talk about fast shipping. Ordered it before lunch on Monday got it just after lunch on Wednesday. Thanks Steve.
