  1. Site looks great! And as far as Z's being SPL only.....exhibit A: My first hand experience with 4 Z 15's......Sounded GREAT!

    Lol.

4 15s, and sounded great. WOW.

I have yet to hear anything over 150db, that sounds great.

Why does people think SPL subs is suppose to sound like the Cheapest equipment distorted to the max.

I'll ask, why did they sound great?

You sound a bit trollish today. Maybe have a rest and come back later?

Not to be rude, but you do sound a bit like you're bashing the crap out of DD.

  2. this car audio industry is shit is because the wannabe gangstas with there 2 12's off 5000 watts and a maxed out amp thinking that there this slams.

    My 2 12's on 5000watts slams..

And I only got the gain 1/2 way up.

So that makes me a wannabe?

And how did you set that gain?

EDIT: lol, I fail, you is mod and pro, not n00b. Sorry.

  3. Once, this guy I know asked me why my box was so big (half wall, 1 18") I just said that it makes it louder and play lower (so he could understand it, didn't want to get technical) what he said next was a classic. He said "oh, my mate said that small sealed boxes are louder" I laughed a bit and just told him that his mate is most certainly wrong.

funny part is, physics says that a sealed box should be louder lol. proof that audio just doesn't make sense.

    really? lol, why is that?

It isn't in the real world though, so he still sounded like an idiot.

  4. I've heard of bad things happening. Like coils turning over.

    Huh? Turning over?

When you guys say 'warm up' you know that the surround and spider aren't going to gain much heat. Only a very minor amount from friction in the material. Otherwise, you'd have to thrash the heck out of the coil to warm up the whole sub, and if you do that, you've been playing it loud anyway.

    Unless you mean something else?

Warm up from the heat in the car from the heater playing the sub will just loosin it up a bit

    Exactly, makes sense.

So a better way for everyone to word their sentences would be: "have the heater on for a bit until the car has warmed up, until then, don't play the subs to loud"

Instead of: "Just warm them up by playing them at lower volume for a bit"

    See what I mean?

  6. Different cars different electrical systems.

If your dropping below 12 volts your using all your current your alternator is producing and draining your battery.

I say upgrade alternators with a respectful company. You shouldn't have any more problems.

Adding batteries will only put a banaid on the problem IMO, you need more current, not storage.

What's the point in a big ass alt if you have no decent battery to get topped up with any extra power you aren't using? Unless you're going to have your car running every time you play music, you'd be better off with batteries. And batteries can supply way more current than an alt can for shorter amount of times. You could pull 1,000 amps from a big battery for a few seconds with no problem, you can't do that with an alt though without putting heaps of strain on it.

Batteries supply current, as do alts. If you didn't have current, you wouldn't have power, you wouldn't have freaking electricity. Batteries just store their power in a chemical form, while alts convert movement into it.

  7. Squaro-ports? :peepwall:

I saw a post a while back (this question gets asked to many damn times) and it said that round ports have less surface area on the inside of the port, so therefore less air resistance in the port. That was probably the worst description of it, but you get the idea.

The flare just helps to stop turbulence at the mouth and (if flared too) tail of the port.

A somewhat interesting page for those who like reading and graphs: http://www.subwoofer-builder.com/flare-testing.htm

  8. Ok, I screwed up on my box and it won't fit in my trunk. Its only a couple of inches stopping it from going in. The original plan was to have subs facing the back of the car along with the port, but the only way i've found to put it is long ways with the subs facing the side of the car. My only other option is setting it in the back seat. Would it sound shitty firing to the side of the car?

Should sound better than sitting on the back seat, but why don't you try it and tell us? It's just 15 or so minutes of box moving/testing.

  9. Well I have a total of three subs I'd like to try this with, one 10 (that is in need of severe repair) for a home theater and 2 12s that I wanna use in my car. Problem is that I only have about 13" for top to bottom clearance.

Tune the 10" as low as you can for home theater, the lower the better, that means you won't need to put a subsonic filter on it. 13"s is fine, I'm guessing that these subs are pretty standard, so they probably have a mounting depth of 6" or so, add 2" or so for the wood, 3" for space under the box and it should fit.

Well the 10 is an OLD MTX Terminator. Paper cone, cloth/foam surround. It's current condition is dented dustcap, surround torn in areas, rusty magnet...

And so as for the 12s, 8in height before putting on the additional 3in and I have ~30in of width. All I dont have is depth and port size, any suggestions?

And as for the home theater towers I have, I need to get new surrounds on the two 10s in them. And what effect does a dented dustcap have?

I think you can fit it all in. How much volume do you have?

For bass and with what you will be using it for, no worries. If you have a dented tweeter it would screw up the dispersion and probably a bunch of other stuff. And if you are doing extreme SPL kinda stuff the pressure in the box would probably destroy the dustcap pretty quick. There are videos where people burp their subs and the dustcaps invert from the pressure. With what you are doing it shouldn't matter though.

Ways to fix dustcap: vacuum it out with a vacuum cleaner or put a stick up the pole vent and push it out from behind or cut the dustcap off and reshape/replace it.
