No because you could send a clipped single from you HU to your amp.
That's what i expected however i tried it and when I had the o-scope hooked up off the amp with the amp gains turned down I played the test tones and it didn't clip at all. Even when I turned it up to 35 (maximum volume). I guess thats why I'm confused.

I have an Alpine CDA-9813 (I know it's old but it gets the job done) and a Polk Audio 1100.5 amplifier. I'm trying to set the gain levels on the amplifier but I have a few questions and there is so many different things on Youtube that I'm not sure what is best. I'm using a 0 dB 40 Hz test tone to set the sub level and a 0 dB 1kHz test tone for the highs. I have read that you set the head unit volume to 2/3 or 3/4 the total volume (Max volume is 35 for my particular model) and slowly increase the gain on the amp until just before the signal clips on the o-scope. That part I get. This is probably a stupid question but what I would like to know is, as far as the volume level on the head unit wouldn't you want it set as high as possible before setting the gain on the amp so you have a "hotter" signal going into the amp? I saw on Steve Meade's Youtube example he talks about setting his volume just a few clicks short of full volume. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I figured if anyone knew it would be SMD forum members.

Damn, that does suck!! It really sucks when you are waiting for something and Fed-Ex fucks it up like that. When my amp was delivered it looked like the box had been dropped down a flight of stairs but the packing on the amp protected it and it still worked. I'm kind of worried now because I ordered an Fi Q15 that will be here on Friday. Hopefully UPS does a better job. Good luck with your claim. Hopefully they will do a better job delivering it next time.

Hello, long time browser of the forums but first time signing up. I have a new amp and I will be replacing the top face plate with plexi-glass so I can mount one or two 30-50mm pc fans to keep it cool during the upcoming summer months. On my last amp I powered the fan from the remote wire but I'm not even sure how much volts it was outputting. All the pc fans are 12v. So what I'm asking is if anyone knows of a general 12v power source I can tap into on the amp that will only supply power to the fan when the amp is on, i.e. the 12v power cord from the battery wouldn't work because it would constantly be on. Thanks.
Here ya go. This link will help explain how to set up a relay with you system.
-
wire in a relay and use the 12+ lead from the battery
This would be the easiest way to go. Just use the remote wire to switch on the relay and run your amps and fans off the relay. Then they will turn on with your system.

Btw, which model do you have? the single voice coil or dual?

Change of plans, going sealed instead of ported and I Just bought two Powerbass M154's. Each speaker needs at least 3.75 cu ft internal volume, So I would be looking at at least an 8cu ft box correct?
So far the dims I came up with on the rockford box builder are h20 x w35 x d24 = 8.07 cu ft, Now am I supposed to multiply all those numbers and divide by 1728? That comes out to 16,800/1728 = 9.72, Now I dont understand what to do next, what does 9.72 mean?
I can help if you want. First, How much space do you have to work with? Also, are you sure you want sealed? If you are going for pure SPL ported would be the way to go. I use Bass Box Pro and it will figure out most of the stuff you need so let me know what you have as far as space and I will give you dimensions.

easy way to ask for a ticket and having someone KNOW you have some bang... Bangin In neighborhoods is like asking for a thief to follow you home so they know where to break into your car.
I agree. I used to have my shit turned up all the time but as I get older (and smarter) I have started to turn it down around neighborhoods and around town for several reasons. The main reason being that I have had my system stolen 2 times and had several other failed attempts.

well i have 2 DD 10s rhere 510 and i am pushing them with an TMA 500.1 at 2oms there in a turbo bass probox.
the guy at the place i bought the DDs dold me the box will work but it will do better in a round portted costom box.
i dont no what to do. well it soung better of not. hrer is 2 of my vids.
Definitely go with a custom made box. like everyone said prefab boxes are usually tuned high and a lot of the ones I have seen the construction is pretty shoddy. You will be much happier with the sound of a custom box. Just remember to get your measurements right when you build your box.

The relay setup is the best way to go. Just tie it in to the remote wire on your deck that is used to turn on the amp. Make sure to check the current draw of the relay so you do not exceed the current rating of the remote wire. You could probably find a relay like this at Newark or Grainger.

Screw JL if they were the Sundown SA-8s ($120) They would kill that FI, But the FI because its a 15 will play lower easier.
EDIT: to lem4306 There is a reason why people go for the off man stream brands like DC & FI. It's because they're 1. Usually cheaper then a compairable sub and 2. They're usually better. Name means nothing without performance and price. IMO JLs are overated for the price you pay for them.
I agree. That's actually why I would like to get the Fi Q15. I haven't seen anyone with them out here and while I do like the way JL's sound I think they are over rated as well considering the price.
-
If you were going to put up the money for 4 JL 8's you could prolly get 2 15Q's for that much.
At that point I think space might become an issue.
-
Yea ive heard fi before and i have 2 12 w3s and trust me the fi is the better choice. If u really want 8s go with the dd 1508s. U wont be disappointed
Yeah, I don't really want 8's but I'm just weighing the options. According to the poll it looks like the Fi Q15 is the way to go.
-
Dude the fi will smoke that jl
Four JL's? I'm just wondering because I have never heard an Fi. Just what I have seen on the web but they look pretty bad ass.
-
Depends on the type of music you happen to listen to and where you want to tune at but i'm voting on the FI.
I listen to west coast rap and I really love that very deep bass. It will be going in a (don't laugh) 2006 Taurus. I have the whole trunk to work with too.

A friend of mine is convinced that four JL Audio 8W3v3-4's would be better but I'm thinking about getting an Fi Q15 with dual 2 ohm setup. Help!
Ok I need some help...

I have always thought it was 27 or 28 but I couldn't get the signal to clip off the RCA's or through the amp with the gains turned down and volume @ 35. I wanted to basically see when the deck would start to clip the signal and it wouldn't do it. It kind of threw me off because I have not seen a deck before that didn't start to clip the signal at high volumes.
