  1. So my last setup cost me in total, $300 dollars. I'm trying to put together another setup now.

The type of music I listen to is mostly rock/indie and rap. I dont plan to compete in any spl contests nor am I crazy about insane bass. I listen at normal levels or slightly louder. My friend has 2 kicker 12's and for daily use it gets annoying at times. I'm looking for a setup that sounds better than the average car. (It be rly cool if I could get it to sound nicer than my dads maxima which has a bose system, I know its not the best system but it's better than most)

I'm also trying to make this a pretty cheap setup since I will be doing everything myself so if I mess something up at least it wont be expensive. Plus I'm a college kid and I dont have $$$ to spend on a lot of audio gear. I'm looking into a 4 channel amp, gonna amp the front speakers and bridge 2 channels for the sub. I'm gonna leave the rears alone for now. So here is what I'm thinking....

Front components: Cadence CWM-6KIT Aluminum 6.5" Component Kit $70

    Amp: MB Quart ONX4.125 $150

    HU: Sony CDX-GT350MP $85

Amp kit: Knu konceptz 4g amp kit, I'll also wire all the speakers with 12g speaker wire. $110

I'll get a custom ported box, tuned around 35hz prob. But I can't decide on a sub. The amp will produce 500watts rms at 4 ohms. I was one of these 3:

SKAR Audio VVX-12 (idc about the guy being a scammer, I hear they are good for the $)

    TC Sounds Epic 12

Maybe a Sundown sa12 or DC level 2. (the sundown is expensive and the level 2 might not have the DVC option i need)

All those subs are rated at 500rms, while the Skar is 500rms. Will only giving it 500rms power be okay? I'm looking for a sub that can play lows decently well.

So guys, I'm looking to spend around $600 total. Can you suggest a 500rms @ 4ohm 12 inch sub? And can you improve on my setup at all? Maybe suggest another part for around the same price that would be better or cost less?

    Thanks!

  2. Goto audiosavings

Thanks, thats and sonic electronix r usually my go to sites.

I found this head unit. Thoughts? 70$

All I do is either plug in my ipod, listen to the radio or play CD's.

I only need one set of pre amp outs for the mono amp. I'm gonna keep the speakers unamped.

  3. Hey guys, so what do you think would be a better sub and amp combo?

Keep the type S 12 I have and match it to a kicker 300.1 amp.

    OR

Keep the Alpine amp I have which makes 245rms and match it with a Sundown Audio E8v2 which is a 200rms sub. (that shouldnt be to much with a good tune right?)

What do you guys think? Cost will be basically within 10$ of each other.

  4. Didn't notice the Kicker Zx300 lol, yeah that should work great :D

I'd personally get a JVC, given the brands you've listed. Mine cost like $100 and works fine, better than my $300 flipout touchscreen one :P

is it a 3 amp out? B/c the one I saw was a JVC at walmart that was like 70$ and had 3 pre amp outs which blows my mind since most HU with that many are like 170+. Makes me questions how good it is but how bad can a HU really be in general. I rly like the button layout.

  5. always keep the stock system for when you sell your car you then get to keep the stuff you spent good money and time on <_<

Well this wasnt rly an expected sell and a lot of the stocker stuff was broken. But I didnt wanna keep the speakers. the headunit would of been nice though but we worked it out in the sell.

I'm looking at some low level JVC, Dual, Pioneer or sony HU for under 100. I only need 1 pre am out for the sub. I dont plan to run amped speakers.

  6. Thanks guys! And yeah, looking for a mono amp. I'll check out that kicker, I saw it before and liked it.

    What about this one?

The one you posted was 400rms at 2ohms, isnt that a little much? This one will be 300 @ 2ohms which is exactly what I need. And those 20$ can go towards the amp kit. Thoughts?

Any other advice about the box or amp kit would be fine. I think I'll go with 8g but still wanna do a little more research.

  7. So I sold my first car yesterday :(

It had a new HU and speakers all from clarion. I left those in the car. I took the sub/amp/box though.

So now I'm looking for a new car and in the mean time I am looking to sell my pioneer sub and maybe the alpine amp.

I have a sub at home which is a 4ohm DVC alpine type-s 12. It's rated at 300 watts RMS. So I have a sub.

I also have a shitty pre fab sealed box. I dont really have the cash or tools to make my own.

So this leaves me with 3 questions for you guys.

    1. Can you recommend me an amp under 150$ that will give me 300watts rms or around that at 2 ohms?

    2. Will an 8g amp kit be enough for 300 watts rms? I plan to upgrade the speakers but I wont be amping them.

    3. Is there any way to slightly improve my existing prefab box? I heard I can caulk the edges and that will help.

    Thanks!

  8. So here is the build of my 94 toyota corolla. Was my grandmas car, now it's mine. This car is what got me into car audio after I installed the deck.

    System:

    DB links 4g amp kit

    Alpine V12 2 channel amp

    Clarion HU

Clarion 4 inch coaxial speakers all around

    Pioneer 12inch sub

    Pre-Fab craigslist box

Total: 290 dollars for it all. I'm a college kid on a budget, what can I say. All was installed by me besides the sub/amp. Had help from a friend.

Sorry for the shitty iphone pics.

  9. So I think I might sell my setup soon. Ill sell the box sub n amp all in one. It's in my trunk. Can I just leave the wires in my trunk for now if I disconnect it and disconnect the power wire from my battery or is this dangerous. Can it start a fire? If not I have an old amp I can hook it up too and just have all the connection installed on an amp with no sub. Which I hear is safe. What's best?

  10. I have a few questions based on a video I watched about car audio, specifically amps and subs.

    1. I heard that the smaller the car the smaller the sub should be. For example, a 15 in a Honda CRX wouldn’t sound as good as a 10. I heard the sound wave needs time to travel. Is this true?

    2. I know prefabed boxes get a bad rap. I know ported are bad to get pre fabed since it needs to be built to the subs specs. But I heard prefabed sealed boxes aren’t so bad. At least as long as it have enough power. True?

    3. This question is rly basic. I’ve heard that it’s better to over power a sub than to under power it. I also heard its good to get a little more RMS power than the sub is rated at. But how much more? Can you match up, for example. A 700watt RMS amp with a 500Watt RMS sub as long as you keep the gains down. Can you run this reliably?

  11. Thanks for the info!

Yeah my current setup is in a prefabbed box and Idk how it's rly tuned. The guy who installed it tuned it but I question his work now since I found he ran the power wire and RCA's on the same side which everyone says is basic logic not to do. But thats my current setup.

I'm just starting to think of my new setup. I talked to ppl in the chat and got a lot of good info. I just messed around and threw stuff together to try to see what fits my price range.

I have one question though, anyone got info on Klaus boxes? Are they legit? I mean it seems like you give them all the specs and they build it.

Do you know anywhere else I can get a custom box for a good price?
