  1. Alright So I just played the sub free air and the coil rub was clearly audible. Should have done this before I stuffed it in the box I built, but then again I shouldn't have to, since skar should have tested it before it shipped to me. Dont know how they could have missed the noise during testing. Not trying to talk crap about skar because I know mistakes can and will happen, especially when things get busy. Hopefully I can get this warrantied and get it fixed or replaced. Will update with more info when Skar emails me back.

  2. So over the last couple of days I have had this sub playing at low volume to break it in. The highest it has been is 22/35, it can barely be heard outside of the car, even with the windows down. Today I decided to turn it up a little bit to 26/35 and I heard a a rubbing/flapping noise that seemed to be coming from the sub or the box. I immediately shut the sub off via the sub setting on the deck and checked everything out. I pushed on the cone in the middle slightly and it sounded like the coil was rubbing and it is also stiffer than it should be. When I got the woofer it smelled like ca glue so I figured it was a re cone and didnt press on the cone. I think this is what was causing the slight smell. You couldnt hear the rubbing/flapping noise at low volume. I am filling out the contact form on skars website now

  3. i NEVER smelt coil when breaking in my VVXs. My guess is that your clipping, and if your using the amp in your sig, its certainly the guilty party. And I had a bc2k at .5 out of the gate on mine, so power wasnt the issue

The amp can put out clean power.Sure its not as good as some brands but it does nearly rated and it does it clean. And for $120 shipped I cant complain so far. I bought my kid a ton of christmas presents instead of a better amp.

  4. Thanks RooTxBeer

If its smelling that means you're doing it right

Honestly it was a VERY slight smell. I know what a fully blown coil smells like and this did not smell nearly that strong. I did stop and check the sub and amp after I smelled it and neither were hot, only a little warm, and like I said above it did not get any worse

  5. Set your gains properly, depending on the input voltage from the RCA's, you could still be clipping. And I really never heard of new woofers having coil smell. Mine never did.

RCA voltage is 4 volts. I have no way to set the gain accurately. I can get a hold of a dmm but I have read that it is not a great way to set your gains

  6. They'll stink for a few then you'll be fine till you clip the hell out of it.

Thanks man. I I figured it was ok. I bumped for a good 2 hours and it didnt get any stronger, just thought I would double check

A little smell is normal, but why do you have your LPF so low. Around 80ish is where most set, at 40 your missing a lot of bass.

Couldn't you hear most of your bass was chopped?

Man I type way too slow.

It was an honest mistake. I had a long ass day and It has been over a year since I've heard any bass, but yes it did sound a little weird.

  7. I just recently bought a skar vvx-12 d4 from the end of the year sale. Just got it hooked up today and rode around bumpin for a bit. I noticed a very faint coil smell. Is this normal for a new woofer? Equipment is in my sig. I have no way to tell If I'm clipping but the sub nor the amp were hot, only barely warm.

    Amp settings:

LPF: 40 hz ( Lowest it will go)

Subsonic: About 28-30 hz I think ( range is 5-50 hz and its set a little over half)

    Gain: A tad over a 1/4

    Bass Boost: Completely off

    Bass Boost Frequency: Completely off

    HU settings:

    LPF: 70 hz

    HPF (Front and Back): 150hz

    Subwoofer Level: 15/15

    Bass Boost: Off
