I am a oak ply guy myself...
Strong as birch and IMO it looks better.
It may be $15 more than MDF, but it smells good when its cut, and it is MUCH MUCH lighter than MDF.
-
Looks pretty nice, man.
Thank you
Looks good man
I appreciate it man
Last time I bought it oak ply was like $45 per sheet. Looks good man its always nice to see something different.
Yea I am one who tries to do things a bit different now and again. Thanks CJ!
**Update**
I forgot to mention the inside was glassed last night. Just did a single thick coat. And I added a bolt set for the terminals. Also has 8 awg wire for the speaker wires.
-
just a quick question how much did you pay for the oak
btw i like the look
Locally the Red Oak 12 ply was on sale, and as cheap as birch 8 ply.
So it was a no brainer.

**Since this design is kind of universal for a trunk, I added the sketchup file and the PDF materials list/cut sheet file if anyone wants to build it.**
I am FAR from a carpenter. So take it easy. I didnt match the grain perfect, and I noticed the imperfections in the veneer were NOT visible until I put the stain on, go figure lol.
- 3/4" 12 ply Red Oak Extra Thick Veneer
- Double face plate
- ~ 3.0 Cubes after displacement
- 30 Hz tuning
- 15in^2 port area per cubic foot
- 3/8" Routed edges
- Minwax Antique Oak Stain (2 coats)
- Premium Poly (used on basketball courts etc. Got it from work) 4 coats
- About 4-5 hours of sanding before the stain and between coats.
- Locking T-nuts used with lock washers for the sub (not pictured)
- Assembled with only 4 screws, extreme duty liquid nails was used for the construction.
- Inside was glassed after the pics were take
- 8 AWG wire was used with bolt terminals
And here are the results:
For size comparison, this is a memphis 15 on top of it.
I liked it. Sounds excellent, and it is every bit as strong as Birch ply.
So if you want to go for a different look, try the Oak ply if it is 12+ ply.

Bump, added a ton more pics. Will trade for a nice 12"

You need to measure out your trunk. Build the box to the vehicle...
-
Supercharged is right. You're gonna need between 10-14 square inches of port are for the L7 8' s. If you have max dimensions shoot me a pm and ill help you out.
Have you considered sealed enclosures due to your space limitations?
-
Well not completely...lol Happened today during a demo at work.....video coming up when i get home....gonna try and take her completely out tomorrow!
Tweeter Fell out lol
-
The L7 is "louder" to the hear but doesnt match the CVX for sound quality....
If you spend a decent amount of time finishing up a nice L7 box, it can sound decent.
-
Any line above the SX is still made in USA and yea they MX is an engineering machine!
I was thinking it had to be decent with the 4" coil and the neo mags. I just questioned RE now adays...
So anything above the SX line are still made in the USA?

How about a custom T3 T2000 with triple spiders, and a fresh recone... compared to the RE MX?
Both have fresh recones...
But the T3 has a 8 layer aluminum coil upgrade, and woven leads. He offered to trade straight up for the MOJO..
Any thoughts?

lol family pics 30 years from now should just be flabby skin on bottom

PM coming your way.

Possibly trading my Memphis Mojo Quad 1 Ohm (New CM Style basket, 5000W max version). I am looking to save space and downgrade.
I usually would not consider RE lately, but I got an offer to trade.
I am really considering it. I wanted to know what others thought.
Sorry knowledge I am going smaller, not bigger.
-
I am considering trading for a 12" RE MX with a brand new recone.
I know it has a neo motor and a 4" voice coil, but what subs are these comparable to?
Could one REALLY take 2000W RMS daily?
-
my box is huge, like 8 cubes with 5 cubes of port lol, first box but it gets really loud lol
Thats huge for one 15"
-
Up for sale still. Need this sold guys
-
-
Bump.
Will trade for a 12" sub that can handle 2000W+ RMS and is a dual 1 or dual 2 ohm.
-
lol some interesting replys ill say that!
I ended up hooking them up to a DDM3 @ 2ohm which is only putting out 1500watt so 750watt per sub and they are only moving a tiny bit (can only just hear them), And thats with the stereo turned up to my max listening level.... So ill drop them down to .5ohm which will be roughly 3200watts so 1600watt per sub and see what happends (And yes i have the power to back it up)
Someone needs to do some reading... on both installs and ho to set gains on a amp.You may have already clipped your subs to death man.
-
sounds like lots of misinformation here, as well as a bad install.
^^This
-
Those subs are 600rms each.
Thats true but on the box it says "Up to 2000watts power handling" So thats why im a little paranoid as to how much power i can actually give them, I pretty much want to give them as much as they can take/handle.
They can take/handle 600 RMS as long as it is good clean unclipped power.

Bump. Need these sold guys. Nice sub here

Thank you man I really appreciate it
I am FAR from a carpenter dude. I wouldnt do it without a nice table saw, decent router, and good large scale woodworking clamps. Other than that, I used basic tools and I am not a skilled or experienced wood worker. I spend probably 8+ hours of work on it including assembly and sanding.
Yea it was on sale. Plus I liked the veneer a lot better.
