  1. Use common sense when looking it over, I'd ask to look at all the receipts to prove its got a new head and timing belt. Make sure it's not leaking any oil or other lubricant's, look for smoke when you start it up if its smoking chances are its an oil burner. Also make sure all the fluids are at the proper level. Don't be afraid to ask the owner questions either. Obviously when your driving it put the car through it's paces check the clutch, brakes, steering and alignment. Make sure there aren't any unusual sounds, ticks or clicks.

  2. Put your jeep on a diet and loose some excess weight, port and polish, magnum m1 intake, holley high flow throttle body and get a good set of headers. Don't waste your time on a throttle body body spacer, tuner or ignition. You can get a good set of plugs, wires and coil but their really not gonna do that much. Don't run E3'S either.

why not run E3's i been running them in my jeep for 3 yrs now now problem and my mpg improved when i put them in

I tried them in both of my trucks a dakota with the 5.2 and a ram with the 5.9 and neither truck seemed to like them, they both just felt sluggish and were missing even at idle. So I ended up replacing them with autolite platinum's and both trucks run great now. If he can run them with no problems then by all means go for it it's just I didn't have any luck with them.
  3. is it a dodge? If your looking for towing and 4 wheeling swap to the 318 (if its the dodge). 318s are cheap, reliable, and nearly bulletproof. Not the most poweful engine but it will get the job done affordably.

X2, That's what I was thinking. I got a 97 Dakota with the 5.2L 318 and a 97 Ram with the 5.9L 360 both are extremely reliable and have plenty of power. Honestly, I'd stay away from any 4.7L I've heard many people who have had major engine issues. Also not sure if your aware of the notorious Dodge Automatic Transmission issues.
