For most amplifiers of that era, it is a simple pre-amp through power amp design. Most do not have complex equalisation (only having bass and treble) and nearly all do not have any form of crossover or infrasonic/high frequency filters (The A-88x does have a 15Hz subsonic filter). To run a woofer of the amplifier, use one channel and use a Passive Crossover to split the signal from the source (CD player, computer etc) into high and low bands, then feed the low into the amp. Alternatively, some have only a sub output, so use that and feed into a single channel of the amp.

Most amplifiers of this era and design, in fact almost all, do not have the ability to run bridged. So I am afraid you must use one channel per woofer/coil. However, the A-88X does have the ability to drive low impedances such as two ohms per channel with no fault, as it uses seperate power supplies for each channel. I reccommend you read this article http://www.elitestereo.netfirms.com/a88x.htm as it contains a hefty amount of information on the A-88X.

Cheers,

Mick
