front stage redesign

i want a bit more thump in my doors, right now im running a set of focal 165krx2 components but they don't hit lows very well, and they don't get as loud as i'd like them to. i'm not a huge spl guy but i like loud. on top of that i wanted to do a bit more complex front stage that would blend better with subs and whatnot so i want to do something like the following

-selling the krx2s and getting 2 pairs of 3 ways--either hertz or rainbows. MAYBE i would upgrade to krx3

-adding an 8'' in each door--haven't really put any thought about what i would do here but my brother has 4 jl audio 8s sitting around doing nothing so i figured maybe i'd use them, basically an older version of this sub http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs.php?series_id=28

and i'm not sure if i would leave 1 set in the factory locations and add a custom kick panel enclosure, or if i would just do custom door panels to hold everything. but the 8s would be in the map pocket location which is separate from the door panel.

thoughts? suggestions? bueller?

chances are whatever you guys say i should do i'll end up doing hahaha :pardon:

i don't have any processors YET simply because i'm waiting for the next batch of technology to come out, i was thinking since i have an alpine HU i'd get the PXA-H800. possibly with the RUX controller so it can be standalone without a laptop for the most part. if not i'd go with probably a RF 3sixty.3 whenever the hell it comes out. or if iwas impatient i'd just get a 3sixty.2 haha

and i thought i mentioned but i guess i forgot, part of the low volume lows might actually be my doors because its a 1985 bronco, this is part of the reason i wanted to do custom panels, it would clean up everything and make them a little bit more secluded. broncos are not built for SQ but guess who has 2 thumbs and is built for SQ? THIS GUY! 8)

and amps, eh i haven't really looked into much yet either. this day and age there are so many companies it won't be difficult to find an amp that will be sufficient to power whatever drivers i end up with. BUT i do already have a pretty good little polk amp pa 500.4

and i will soon be getting an arc audio ks900.6 :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: cause i know how to find good shit for cheap

How about the Bit 1 as another option which is fairly popular around these parts. Personally I think ill go with a P90/processor combo next time. If you want to do 3way active on the Cheap a D2 is a good option.

Loudness is no substitute for musicianship, and partial deafness is no badge of honor. I was once able to hear this advice.

So you're powering your Focal components off the head unit and are wondering why they "don't hit the lows"?

Buy that Arc amp you're thinking about or at least something that doesn't start clipping around 5w of output. Worry about the processor later as it won't make a lick of difference if you don't have an amplifier or your amp is a POS.

i'm not running them off the HU, if anyone buys focals and does that, they should be lynched. i'm just saying i haven't put too much thought into what amps i'm going to upgrade to because i don't know what they're going to be powering as of yet. the polk is not a shitty amp but not a SQ amp by any means.

Sorry...missed that that bit.

As an experiment, turn the x-over off on the amp and reset your gains. I never trust the silk screening on an amp when it comes to crossover points and in my experience with Polk amps, their crossovers kinda suck anyway. That's why I recommended resetting your gains as you may be able to get more clean power out of the amp with the crossover turned off. Unless they updated their crossovers from the original MOMO carbon things, you're adding distortion if you use them.

I'd also be weary of manufacturers who rate their amps at only 1 freq (1kHz). But since you have your heart set on an Arc amp, and really - who doesn't?, you have nothing to worry about. Their products are top-notch and are one of only handful of amps out there I'd buy sight unseen. But since I'm cheap I stick to old school SQ amps.

i have the x-overs set on flat and my gains were set with a DD-1 distortion detector (best thing EVAR) and yes the arc will be purchased tomorrow at some point for 15% of retail cost :D

and yeah i have no idea about my polk amp, i mean it sounds clean even when i turn it up but it just doesn't hit low and i feel like it should be a bit louder
