what to do.... should i make a new box with port back sub up or make a fiberglass box?

I currently have my American bass hd12d2 in a 2.5 cuft box tuned to 34 Hz. Currently The sub and port are both facing back and are on the same plane. What can you gain from having the sub up and port back. I see everyone putting there huge subs like that. Or if i wanted to do a custom fiberglass, how would i accurately measure all of the curves and stuff? I tried bassbox pro to miake a box but i must not get it.bi enter all of the information about the sub and it tells me it only needs a box that is 1.02 sqft tuned to 30 Hz??????? What the he'll is that about
