Got it cut and also got the corners transferred on and ready to cut. and the co supervisor sleeping on the job Yes, like that!! Other side Baffle in place. Looks good! I like the fits. The top wants to sag a bit cause there's no support. Needs sides now! View from the cabin. The boss back from lunch! He's snoring folks! Should've gotten a video! Damn! So the corners were a little tight, forgot to get a pic, so I had to take them down a bit. These corners are going to be a pain to get done I think. But I have an idea or two for them. Other side. This is what I used to take down the corners. Did I mention that I love this thing yet? Here she is in place. Didn't put the brace back in, but it it needs it until I get the sides squared away. So this is layer one of two. The second layer will go in approx 2" back from the first layer. There's a very good reason for this! You'll see as things progress! Right side. Good fit Left side. Good fit! That's it for today. So there it is. That's what I got done today. So the upper corners are going to be a pain to deal with. But I have an idea or two in order to take care of that. But I think I may wait until layer #2 is on to do it. May not be much more done this weekend, but I'll see if I can fit anything in. Thanks for checking it out! scooter99 Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Share Posted May 26, 2013 SO I was able to get a couple things done today. Not much. Check it out. Time to sand some filler! 40 grit, let's get to it! Base done, time for walls Walls done. However, I'm not happy with the back wall. I'm thinking I'm going to go ahead and cut it out. I'll probably put a piece of wood in there, and glass on the wood. That will make a nice solid wall. Or maybe I'll just put the wood on and call it a day. Not sure. Whoops this was blurry. Just a peak of what it will look like! NOICE!! Other side Have a little plan here. Thinking if i can somehow mount these hinges on the back side of the amp, I may have enough room to lift them up and get to the settings to adjust. We'll see. What it would look like raised up! More to come! So the couple things like I said that I'm dealing with are the back wall, and figuring out the hinge thing. So I'll be dealing with those in the next few days. Also need to start climbing up the number chain with the sand paper. Gonna do another sanding with 100, and then probably do some spot filling. Anyone have any ideas on thinning down filler a little bit? Thought about putting resin in it, a little small bit, but not sure how that would go. Maybe I'll just try it and see where I get with it. SO the wife and kids went to her sisters house for today and tonight. I'm supposed to be working on the sunroom, and I will, but I thought I'd take some "Me" time first. This is the start of the second layer of Part 1. Second front baffle. Little ear there that needs to be taken off. Other side same thing Wasn't real happy with the way that fit in there, and while I didn't get any pics of it, it was about 3/16" short of the bottom of the top piece. Not good enough for me. So I re cut it! about 1/16 is tolerable. Much better Other side Countersunk and screwed from the bottom Pre drilled and screwed from the side. other side Through the top piece Added the second top piece and screwed in second top piece. Doesn't look like much, but when it's all said and done, it'll make sense. Bottom piece set in Holes predrilled close up Some screws in, not all though. First things first, after dealing with the last part, this table needed some beefing up! Had some siding left over from the sunroom project. This will do just fine. Bam! Ready to work! Time for sheet 2 of 3/4" Birch for part 2! Part 1 took a sheet as well. Part 2 A is cut and ready to assemble. Assembled and ready to move forward! All sides pre drilled, countersunk and screwed. Other side of the box Part 2 B is cut and ready to assemble Look at those cuts. All this with a circular saw btw. No table saw here! Time to put it all together. Still need a back, but we have to put it together first. How are we gonna do that. Slid it over Part A and we're home! Back side view Pre drilled, counter sunk, and screwed. Other side Back side cut and on. This is what the rest of the sides will look like. I have to drill them all out. LMAO and together........................oops! See a problem here? Damn. I must have miss measured. Good thing it's all a dry run. So I apparently didn't think about these two levels. So I need to cut this one down. I actually did these pieces, you can see in the last picture, reverse of what they should've been. So I'll fix that now. See the difference. The space calls for 3 9/16", and this piece is 5 9/16. The bottom piece was fine, for where it was at, but now that has to be remade to be able to attach correctly. This is better. See the bottom now is longer than the top. So we now have a good connection. I'll have to round over the bottom piece since it's inside the enclosure now, but I'll do that later. I actually also have some scrap that I can use that is the same angle as the front, maybe that would be ok as well. I can just glue that onto the back of the bottom piece there and it'll make a nice roll off instead of a squared off edge. Then I put these little ears on the rear part, to kind of close in the corner area. Like this. Now I'll see if I can cut some angled pieces to put in there, or maybe I'll just glass it in. I don't know at this point. Other side Holy Matrimony!!!! front view, what you'd be looking at from the back seat. rear angled view So this is where things went haywire. Got the front part in and was going to test fit the rear part. WOULDN'T FIT! Epic fail on my part! It's too big by about an inch. Maybe less. At first I thought it was just hitting the latch for the trunk, but after taking it out, it gave me a bit more, but not enough. So I'm going to have to see about separating the two pieces of part 2, and maybe having to put them together in 3 different parts. I'm not sure yet. I'll cross that bridge when I step back and take some time to think about it. So that's about it. After writing that about a half hour ago on facebook, I've been thinking about it. I have 2 different options of taking care of this. Either way they both have to come apart. Both meaning both parts of the rear piece. The outer shell has to come off of the inner shell. There are a few things to check: 1 - Will the inner shell fit in the trunk on it's own? I believe yes, but won't know until I take it apart and try. 2 - If the inner shell will fit in the trunk, with it slid all the way forward into place, will the outer shell fit in there or will the inner shell be in the way? 3 - If the outer shell fits, with the inner shell in place, how do I go about gluing the two together? They're pretty tight as it is, so whatever glue I try to put between them will just be spluged out when they slide together and I'm sure not much will be left for it to be stuck together. 4 - If the inner shell will not allow the outer shell to fit in one piece, then the outer shell will have to be broken down. There should be enough room to glue and screw it together piece by piece to the inner shell inside the trunk. This may be the best way to go about doing things. 5 - will the inner and outer shell slide in the trunk, without the back pieces? My thought is that if this will work, I'll make it so the back two pieces, inner and outer, are put together, and then if the inner and outer shell will slide in the trunk together, I can glue that as one piece, slide it in place, screw it to the front piece, and then putty the screw holes and sand and get it ready for glassing together. Then put the back piece(s) on the rear shells, and then glass that together from the front through the sub holes. So as you guys can clearly see, I have some testing and work ahead of me. I also wanted to put some 45's in there on the back wall. I think if I just do the back wall it will be fine. Ok guys, I'm listening! Let me know what you think! scooter99 Posted May 28, 2013 Author Report Share Posted May 28, 2013 I figured out what happened, not that a half inch will get it in the car, but it might. It's kind of a long story, but now that I look back, the piece I had to recut on the front, and pieces I cut, that you guys didn't see and had to recut cause I thought my measurements were wrong, were correct but my back piece was wrong. I did the design on sketch up and forgot to re measure the back piece on it so when I printed it out for my cut sheets, it was wrong there. JUST DAWNED ON ME while I was in the shower. So here's what's up. When I was doing the design I planned on an internal height of 14.5". However, when I did part 1, front part, I was only able to get 13.5" out of it, cause of the frame in the car. So I had to adjust the design, which I did. But when I went to make this back part tonight, I got mixed up. SO I made the height on the back piece 14.5, hence why I had to fix that top part on the front piece. Didn't have to be fixed, it was right, my back part was wrong. So, it's a half inch too tall. So that has to be fixed. Not the end of the world, but it still has to be done. Will a half inch get it in the car, I have no idea. It might, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm also going to change the configuration of the rear piece, so that I can put the back walls together, because I have an idea for the future if I can get the money for it. So I would like to be able to remove those if possible. So I'll have to get those fixed in the next couple days and see where I sit after that. I'll update when I can. I'll post those now. This is just a projection of what I'd like it to look like. I have to figure out if I'm going to have enough strength in it with the plexi windows etc. The reason I was double layering the entire box was to not have any internal bracing if at all possible. Other than maybe some 45's. SO i'll have to see if it's going to be doable with the glass. Here we go. I still have room for another finish baffle trim between it and the seat itself. The reason I have done this in two pieces, is because all in one piece I wasn't going to be able to get it in the trunk, and with the possibility of upgrading or anything in the future, I wanted to be able to keep the front piece, and then change out the rear piece if needed. Just gives me some more flexibility. So I have the two pieces. The front part has the inner walls that are 2" shorter than the outer walls. The rear part has the inner walls that are 2" longer than the outer walls. This gives an overlap when they're connected so I have a spot to be able to screw them together and not have to do any angle screwing or anything like that. They'll simply screw into the other piece. Once that's done it looks like this! This is pretty much the look I'm going for. The front plexi, you see just above, is just 1/4" lexan, that I'll put in the front baffle. This will have a DC logo, or something else on it, I'm not sure yet. Just thought it would break up the huge space between the subs. That's there so I can space the subs out far enough to keep them spread out from the port. The windows in the back will be 3/4" Plexi. I'm thinking instead of doing individual windows, I'll just buy an entire sheet and do the first back piece in that, and then cut out the second back piece to make the windows. Now my question in that is, will that still be strong enough to not need internal bracing? Anyone wanna take a stab at it? I'm open to comments! Ok that's enough for tonight, I'm off to bed! In the middle of that I found a couple of logos I wanted to get put up. So I did that. First the shop! Jon, can we call this the official Elk Grove SHCA remote warehouse?!! Never mind I don't have any stock on me! LOL! Representing though! Not a big fan of a bunch of logos or stickers on my car, so I put them on, but I have them in an inconspicuous place. I'm actually thinking of changing this up, and adding a nice little touch to it. But that's probably down the line. We'll see. So I added my Singer Alternators logo: Removed the Injen logo cause it was kind of scratched up, even though you can't really see it there. And threw in some SHCA love! I would love to have a SHCA logo with the letters cut out, like the rest of them that are there, HINT HINT JON!! LOL I'm going to order another Injen logo and figure out where to put that. Let's move on! There's lots more to go! So I have the enclosure going on, I have the amp rack going on. But for some reason I can't seem to stay on track. I was going to try and do the big three, change the alt out, and change the batteries out. But for some reason, I can't seem to make things simple. Oh well, live and learn. But it's fun to try! WOOT! Before I could do anything, I had to get some supplies! So a trip to Depot was in order, and I got some new toys. Ryobi Bench Grinder, 6". Irwin Bench Vise. But before I could start building I had to build a workbench for this stuff to go on. This is a good spot in front of the shop, under the window. Framed up, 36" tall, 8' long, 24" deep. 3/4" Plywood top. Need to paint it, but I'll do that when I paint the room I'm working on. Time to put the new toys on. This looks like a good spot for the vise. Time for a quick rant! Why in the hell is it, that someone thought it was a good idea to lube these things up so much that it would fit in Adam's ass with no problems. Seriously there is so much oil on here, I could ring out the rag I used, and change the oil in my car. This is ridiculous! End rant! I know I'm supposed to lag it in, but I forgot when I was at the store, and I didn't have any here. So these 3 1/2" screws will work for now. Bench grinder in the middle. I may move this so I can have the table to work on, and don't have to work around the grinder. Probably move it to the end of the workbench on the left there. Overall view So I don't have any electrical in the shop yet. It's on the list, but just haven't gotten there yet. So this is my make shift lighting. Just a couple of shop lights and an extension cord. One outside One inside. Now we're ready to do work!
