Amps and Ohms Question

Hey guys,

Recently I had a problem with my amp and the wires crossed and melted to the ground terminal. I am trying to power 2 15inch RF P2 subs (DVC I believe, each @ 400 Watts RMS) and the installer recommended buying an amp that will put out 800Watts @ 4Ohms. He said it is better to do this than to wire them at 1Ohm. I have since done some research on amps that can output this and have noticed that all of them are significantly higher in cost (we're talking 700$ average here). I really don't want to have to spend close to 1000$ on an amp and am wondering if the advantage of wiring at 4Ohm is really worth it compared to 1Ohm. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and possibly recommendations in regards to this. Thanks a ton in advance!

As long as the amp is one ohm stable it won't be a problem. Should be able to get on for around $200. Also depends on the impedance of the subs. If they are dual 2s u have to run at .5, 2, or 8 ohms. If they are dual 4's u can wire to one ohm no problem.

the woofers impedance will determine what kind of amp you can use.

if they're dual 4 ohm woofers, then you can just get something like a soundqubed (audioque) 750.1. or a 1200.1 and you'll have headroom plus a little more power on tap. wired to 1 ohm.

if they're dual 2 ohm woofers, then you have to get something that does around 800rms at 2 ohms. like a kicker kx800.1, for example.

I am pretty sure they are 4ohm DVC due to the fact that the installer said I'd have to wire @1Ohm or 4Ohm. So basically as long as I get a decent quality amp, I'm just as safe running @1Ohm? I also wouldn't know how to do the Big 3 electrical upgrade myself. Thanks a lot for your input guys.

double check with your own eyes before you go and buy a $200-300 amplifier. i dont really trust your installer since he said for you to wire the subs to 4 ohms.

This would mean removing the sub from the box and I don't have the necessary tools to do this.

you dont have a philips screwdriver?

edit: how are you going to rewire your woofers if you cant take them out of the box?

Having the shop do the install as he won't charge for it. They have special screws and I'm not sure what the name for them is, they aren't standard philips screws.

ah i see. hopefully no corners are cut seeing as he's doing the install for free.

well just let him know that you want the woofers in parallel so you can wire the subs to 1 ohm.
