Hi everyone,

Newly signed up member, looking for some advice on an enclosure for my Alpine Type X 12 set up.

I have had a box in my car for a while, bought it because at the time i couldn't be bothered to make one and it was built for my model car. I am kind of limited for space as i want the box to sit flush under the parcel tray against the back seat so i can still use the boot space or "trunk". After reading over several Audio Forums and watching Video's, about the Type X 12 i'd like to run it it a ported box. The bass i'm currently get really isn't all that good.

The sub was originally installed in a cheap store bought box unsure of the size (sub would have just fitted) looked kinda small and didnt perform all that well, so hence the reason i'm re doing the install.

Hopefully i can get a few pointers for the right direction i should be heading.

Audio system so far consists of

2 Alpine PDX 1.1000

1 Alpine PDX 4.100

1 Type X 12, looking at getting another down the track.

Alpine DVD deck/ Vehicle hub etc etc

Type R 5X7's

Boot space/enclosure

Empty Trunk

actual Box, its an odd shape to fit in comfortably

The current box is sealed for each woofer, unsure of its internal displacement. I'm open to all ideas. I'd like to keep the box size as close to its current dimensions

Here is a very crude sketch i done this afternoon. measurements are in MM not inches, sorry guys. Australian Resident here.

Like i said i'd like to keep it the same size if possible, but i'm open to other options. If i need to change the whole install than so be it.

What is your max dimensions for the box? And are you trying to design the new box around the fact that your getting a second type X? Because a normal ported for a single sub would have one sub hole and then a slotted or aero port.

How long would it be before you get the new Type X? And what's your musical preferences?

max dimensions could be up to, Width 40 inches, Height 14-15 inches, length 30 inches, just depends on if i sell the current enclosure/boot install and start fresh and use the complete boot area for an enclosure. You can see how much the current install uses up, The car isn't a daily driver, it sits in the shed and gets driven on nice weekends, car shows etc....

Yes, trying to design a box around the fact that i would like 2 Type X's as i've just bought another amp, should have another Woofer shortly, but i'm not in a huge hurry to get it done.

As for music, its mostly of the rock, alternative stuff, Linkin park, Trapt, 10 years, P.O.D, disturbed, Staind, Atreyu, No techno, dub step, maybe a few Rap kinda songs thrown in, but not all the time. depends on the mood. lol

If i was you I would wait to build the box untill you get the second Type-X. Because you will need a port once you put the second sub in, and unless your gonna make two holes and cover or seal one then its gonna sound like shit till you get the second.

To allow for your music, I'd tune around 34, I listen to the same music you are talking about and I am tuning to 34.

Also what's your box building experiance level, ever done an aero or just slotted or?

I can give it a shot at drawing up a box latter on Torres, unless someone who is a lot more experienced like Joe X gets to it first :)

By the time i'm finished building the box i'll have another woofer, so thats no problem.

I have no problem building boxes, built 2 enclosures but they were both sealed units for some pioneer 12's a few years back, went well for what it was.

Never done a ported enclosure before, but its still a box with a hole in it. haha.

I'll strip the trunk area down today and get a couple shots of the total area.

If anyone can give me some box dimensions that will work well, that would much appreciated.

3/4 or inch board?

Subs and port facing which direction?

Here is a pic of my car

I'll work on getting some dimension. Can you put down your seats or are willing to lay them down to have the subs firing into the cabin or if you don't want to, you can have firing into trunk area. I would do normal front firing just me though. And use 3/4 inch MDF for the box, the only place I might would use inch, would be the face if you want to do it that way. But you can just use 3/4 MDF and either double face it or brace it, or both lol.

And which do you personally prefer slotted or aero, or no difference to you? I know you said you have only done sealed, didn't know if you have heard slotted or aero

Thanks for that Iceman.

Yeah, seats fold down, 60/40 split.

I was going to do inch MDF on the box face, 3/4 for the rest.

Not sure on the differences on slotted or aero ports.

If i keep it a similar design as to what i have now, the below pic gives dimensions
