Loud & Low 8th Gen Civic - UBL #3 - The Final Chapter - Up to date

Recommended Posts

So yesterday I decided to completely commit to getting some serious work done. So I parked the ride in the back yard and decided to take the truck to work all week. This will allow me to put in work daily when I get home, and not have to put things back together when i'm done so I can drive to work the next day.

Now before I put the sub baffle in, because it's not going to get a trim piece for a while, I decided I didn't want to just look at raw wood until that happens. SO I decided to paint it black. It'll be much easier on the eyes.

Next it was time to address this empty trunk!

1618310_640217109371103_189469549_o.jpg

First the amp rack. This thing is HEAVY now. When it was just a couple layers of wood and fiberglass, it wasn't so bad.

1275164_640217176037763_514309831_o.jpg

Next comes the floor. I'm wishing now I'd have brought the back parts out to the other part, but I'm not going back now. I'll still be doing a false floor, so that should cover most of it.

1617415_640217189371095_2132113115_o.jpg

Next comes the enclosure. Body first.

1602172_640217206037760_1687378055_o.jpg

Ohhh that looks so nice to me.

1518863_640217246037756_2073376979_o.jpg

Port time. I bought some lock washers to space out the screw heads. Recall they were too sunk in. The washers fixed that right up.

View from the back window under the trunk lid. I need to get the back window re tinted. But I decided to wait until this was done because I have no doubt I'd have gotten it done, and then scratched it up. So I waited.

Closer view.

1519503_640217336037747_2118384790_o.jpg

From the front seats.

1486131_640217349371079_2059793152_o.jpg

Then I put the floor in. So how this works, floor in, sealed up enclosure functional.

1519098_640217369371077_2076058386_o.jpg

A few screws, and BAM, amp access!! WOOT!

894020_640217386037742_2016442124_o.jpg

Ok next step was to get the battery racks worked on. Before I had some drywall screws I put in and then cut off the ends outside. Well that wasn't good enough for me.

1496376_640217406037740_1302535251_o.jpg

So I put some 10-32 inserts in there

1512145_640217432704404_909946119_o.jpg

And used some flush mount 10-32 screws to mount the brackets with. Much better looking IMO. No they're not going to be seen, but that doesn't really matter does it.

1598543_640217456037735_376873027_o.jpg

Ok one side done. This is the driver side.

1617894_640217479371066_1830423234_o.jpg

Any questions!!

1617797_640217496037731_1239523355_o.jpg

Both done.

1559533_640217516037729_1344984802_o.jpg

Next is to get them installed in the trunk. Need to make a few brackets to keep them in place, and also a couple of brackets to keep the batteries in when they're installed. I'll work on that tomorrow.

So that's what I've done the last two days. Hopefully much more can get done tomorrow. Still planning on it playing by the weekend. I'm hoping anyway, unless something special happens, and then it may be a few more days than that. But I'm ok with all that. It'l be well worth it for me.

MORE SOON!!!!!

So all is very well tonight. Great progress this weekend. At least I think so.

Let's check out what happened. I jumped back and forth so I'll try to keep it straight.

Let's get started.

I'm going to start with the doors. I decided to start working on the doors, becase they are going to be time consuming and some of the other stuff in the trunk is about done. I'm going to get the battery racks done, and then it's wiring and getting the subs loaded and some other stuff. But I felt the doors needed to be addressed. So I started there.

So the front doors are going to consist of 2 sets of these Mezzo comps. 2 6.5" mids and 2 tweets per door.

1799990_643168905742590_1054540575_o.jpg

The goods

1529807_643168909075923_1309546732_o.jpg

I got out the 1/4" mdf and started to measure out and get some templating going.

1889079_643168949075919_1018193779_o.jpg

1534700_643168955742585_992978896_o.jpg

Once I got it all cut out and measured up, it was time to cut the holes out and the ends.

1888938_643168972409250_452698556_o.jpg

Got the router out and the circle jig that Borris sent to me. Thanks buddy!

1617621_643169005742580_1776195138_o.jpg

Got the outside rounded off

1658466_643169022409245_900025616_o.jpg

Then got the inner holes cut out.

1795171_643169032409244_1851200393_o.jpg

Flush reverse mount ftw!!

Now it was time for another little surprise!

1531577_643169079075906_570520620_o.jpg

Used some construction paper for templating on the doors.

1669772_643169082409239_1123568408_o.jpg

Then got it measured out and added the speaker template to it.

1622419_643169132409234_1258781564_o.jpg

and cut it out.

1655636_643169229075891_751095825_o.jpg

This is the look.

1655729_643169235742557_1302903363_o.jpg

After looking at it and measuring, I decided it needed about another half inch added to it.

1534684_643169252409222_1099431726_o.jpg

CA glued the insert on.

1606236_643169295742551_490748746_o.jpg

1602157_643169302409217_1570506642_o.jpg

And then measured out

1548084_643169309075883_271134376_o.jpg

and cut the center piece out.

1537862_643169345742546_309703709_o.jpg

lining it up

1547962_643169349075879_314018559_o.jpg

and CA gluing it together to make one big template.

Time to transfer it onto some 3/4" ply

1795185_643169379075876_947876385_o.jpg

1519258_643169399075874_852034789_o.jpg

now I used some two sided tape to stick the template on, so I could router out with the flush trim bit on the router table. One of the best investments I've ever made btw, thanks Kyle as always for hooking it up!

1602089_643169525742528_1067803100_o.jpg

Finished pieces.

On the back side of the doors, there are spots where you can drill them out and the top and bottom halves will separate. I decided to do this so I didn't have to deal with possibly getting anything on the top piece.

1511973_643169809075833_2117828348_o.jpg

Old alarm led wire.

1622462_643169815742499_577678690_o.jpg

Now that I have those out, let's get cutting.

1517907_643169859075828_1506144658_o.jpg

set the panels on there, to draw out where I needed to cut.

1622570_643169879075826_388340783_o.jpg

1891609_643169909075823_2105945939_o.jpg

1781250_643169979075816_404985727_o.jpg

And then put my air saw to work!

1547948_643170009075813_242731477_o.jpg

CA Glued the panels in, which was a bit of a pain, because the CA glue just didn't hold. Kept coming off the panels

1622339_643170029075811_1630625899_o.jpg

Now I'm ready for some fleece.

1796020_643170049075809_1703655954_o.jpg

ORANGE FTMFW!!

Next time I decide to do something like this, I need to invest in an air staple gun. Doing this by hand SUCKED HAIRY DONKEY BALLS!! I have blisters today from it.

1557303_643170102409137_1606443222_o.jpg

BUT I got the driver side done.

1890394_643170115742469_1092500874_o.jpg

After looking at this for a moment I decided that the spot right above the mids would be perfect for the tweets to go. I was going to put them in the A-pillars originally, but I didn't like how they were going to fit up there and how far out they were going to stick. So I decided this was good.

1781066_643170129075801_895940928_o.jpg

Made a template.

1780965_643170142409133_1938917259_o.jpg

And put it to some 1/2" ply .

1271909_643170159075798_1135946401_o.jpg

1890456_643170179075796_1642268544_o.jpg

Routered out the edges again for the fleece to staple to.

1523214_643170192409128_540793398_o.jpg

Now the driver side is really done.

1669727_643170219075792_1361354694_o.jpg

And passenger side too.

966144_643170222409125_553173288_o.jpg

Next it was time for some resin, and some black pigment. Never used US Composites before, and never used pigment before. So I had some issues.

Got the doors resined up, but I didn't use enough MEKP. It was cold, but I knew I didn't use enough. Why didn't I add more? I don't know.

886182_643170275742453_806242050_o.jpg

886201_643170285742452_1117508050_o.jpg

1781039_643170305742450_1792383164_o.jpg

So, after that, I decided to do a little other work too. So that being said,

Let's get some buss bars hooked up.

1796737_643165539076260_1823287123_o.jpg

Got my stock here. Gonna get it cut up into the sizes I need.

1537489_643165542409593_414899048_o.jpg

Started taping the tops so I could make my drill points and measurements.

1485994_643165545742926_2093121830_o.jpg

1519359_643165602409587_157928129_o.jpg

1534714_643165605742920_324648364_o.jpg

Ready to start drilling.

1796074_643165615742919_762032011_o.jpg

Started drilling the mounting holes for the battery posts.

1801218_643165662409581_1745105815_o.jpg

1799203_643165669076247_264730378_o.jpg

Get them mounted.

Then I decided to check out the voltage while they were all hooked up. 12.64v is not a bad resting voltage no?

1025289_643165715742909_894120630_o.jpg

So next I got all the cable mounts drilled out.

1655827_643165722409575_855633446_o.jpg

Remounted them, and then threw the charger on it.

1655795_643165729076241_333395214_o.jpg

Second set drilled out.

1262523_643165755742905_60384184_o.jpg

Then it was time to tap them. There was 64 holes to tap, I counted. I did 3 by hand and said EFF THAT CRAP!! SO I got on Youtube and found a video that showed doing it with a drill. That'll be tomorrow.

1518600_643165775742903_930423672_o.jpg

So today, after sitting all night, I came out and the resin still wasn't hard. SO I decided to get the fiberglass chop out, and mix a hotter batch and fiberglass over the fleece and kill two birds with one stone.

1796964_643170319075782_539994517_o.jpg

1669805_643170329075781_1702659301_o.jpg

741237_643170349075779_601990761_o.jpg

And it worked. Used some workshop lights, and a space heater, and it hardened up nicely. Next step will be to get it sanded a bit to knock down some high stuff, and then get the filler on it.
