Naw active through headunit would be your best bet so you're good there. What are your crossovers set at on the h/u (frequency and slope)?

80 - 24db

3.15k - 24db

4k - 24 db

If I drop the tweeter to 3.15k I can not listen to it, its not bright, its just very harsh, raspy, gritty sounding.

Stay at 20 on tweeter. Are your doors deadened? I run 3 pairs here with a nice sql setup. It is your settings. After running a 80prs I was not happy with mid bass so I switched to a P 99RS to get the extra mid bass output plus dsp built in. Tune your highs down and watch your slopes.
