so for example the receiver my friend demoed the sub on didn't have any special outputs for subs (they were all the same). would this mean, basically, that i could run mah shit on any old receiver without much risk?

If you can run the sub directly off the reciever there will be a speaker wire output designated for the subwoofer. and you should have no problem running it like that

If you plug the 4 ohm sub in the 8 ohm speaker output, over heating problems can come up

What i am saying though; If the reciever allows you to directly hook up the sub to the reciever, as in a channel for sub use only, it will usually(check the manual for specs)have a lower impedence rating like 4 ohms. then it will be ok

yes the .1 is the subwoofer channel

2.0 is just 2 speakers without a subwoofer

2.1 is 2 speakers with a subwoofer

4.1 is 4 speaks with a sub

and so on

the only person i wouldnt let build my box would be Ray.
