I have a 1994 Saturn SL that I've been fixing up. My problem is randomly on cold starts there is a loud whooshing sound for the first second when you start the car. It isn't frequent enough to isolate the problem though.

I put in a new starter during winter. Can't recall if it was happening before that, but it doesn't sound like the starter.

I have put in a new head, valves, camshaft, etc. and a new timing chain after the problem.

Other than this, it starts up and runs really well.

Does it have an electric or a mechanical clutch fan?

If mechanical clutch type, it could be the fan clutch going out.

You have a beard of a mysterious sea captain. I would follow you to hell and back.

It's an electrical fan.

I'm pretty stuck with ideas. I've replaced half the stuff under the hood since it started making the noise.
