1992Chevy K1500
So i go to connect my Crunch GPV700.2 so I have some bass for a while. I put my Clarion DB175MP HU for a source. I set my gains with a DMM. I blow a 60 amp fuse (6 AWG wire). Wierd right? Well, here's where it gets wierder. I just decide to disconnect the power at the batt (optima yellow-top). I drop it and it contacts painted sheet metal. It sparks. It wasn't the kind of spark you get by smashing metal on metal. It was the kind of spark you get when you short a battery. I know because it was very, very, very bright. I grab it and can feel the eletricity running through my hand until I pull the power wire from the sheet metal. Now here's how I knew the fuse was blowed, it was completely black. It was an ANL fuse with the little plastic window so you can see when it's blowed. The entire inside was black. So black I couldn't see anything. Well, I grab a DMM and check. I make sure the positive wire isn't touching anything. I put the positive of the DMM on the amp power wire and the negative on the negative of the batt. HOLY voltage!! I was getting exactly 10.9 volts! So, I disconnect the ground and the remote turn-on wire at the amp. Still at 10.9 volts! Steady! With no change! Fearing i'll blow the HU, I immediately disconnect the RCA at both the amp and the HU. Without thinking, I leave the power wire in the amp. NO VOLTAGE! I go back and realize I forgot to disconnect the power wire. On a hunch, I reconnect just 1 of the 2 RCA's. Holy 10.9 volts! I do the same with the other and get the same result! And there is absolutely no short ANYWHERE! No frayed wires, nothing. I checked each and every inch of all wires 6 times! Anyway, my first amp blew after only a few minutes of playing (gains also set with DMM). That was with a different HU and nearly the same thing happened. Well, the amp still plays (I connected it to my blackberry using an RCA adapter and powered it up). This is the second amp to do something similar. At the time I didn't check the power wire for voltage, but the events are nearly identical, so I think the same thing happened. OH, and the fuse I blew was the 60 amp fuse on the power wire. The amps fuse (I think it's a 30 amp) is still good. So, WTH is going on!!? rumproast789
maybe when you connect ur RCA, the amp is being grounded through those? LIke I said, they aren't frayed. And the end where it connects the HU is (was) taped with black electrical tape. 1992Chevy K1500
Anyone? I need to know why this has happened? I'm going to go check, but I think I'm getting DC voltage over my RCA's. That would suck. 1992Chevy K1500
A quick edit: I made a slight mistake. Both amps blew after playing from the same HU. The HU is a Clarion DB175MP. I'm going to plug it back up and check with my DMM. raytard
outside jacket of the rca should be ground, maybe its pulling ground through the hu? 1992Chevy K1500
outside jacket of the rca should be ground, maybe its pulling ground through the hu? That's what it's doing. I disconnected the power wire at the amp and used my DMM to check the voltage. It's 10.01 after setting overnight. Is that normal? And my fuse still has contact. The little see through window is black, but I can still see through it enough to know it's not blown. WTH is going on? My amp still works as of last night, but this is the second amp to do this. The first one completely blew and no longer works.
