should i build a new box?

im new, this is my first post!

hi!

first of all i have a scion tc, bass sounds nice in a hatch

so right now im running an alpine M500 mono amp and a 1242D alpine sub @ 2ohm

my box right now is 30" wide, 15" tall and 15" deep

and the port is 3" wide by 13" tall

it sounds great and i love the setup, its more then enough for me

but the problem is that the box comes out kinda far and my hatch hits it when i close and its bugging me

and the box isnt as wide as my trunk so theres blank space on the sides..

so i was thinking of building a box that is wider and less deep to fit my trunk better

can i accomplish this without loosing the sound how i have it?

if so id probably like to take a crack at making a new box..

my buddy and i are very crafty, and hes got all kinds of power tools and saws to cut some wood.

im sure theres a page on here somewhere i can get the do and donts on sub boxes.

heres a picture of what i got right now

amp is mounted on the back of the rear seat

im hoping this new box will allow me to put it under the rug with maybe a clear window and some LEDs, id like to make it kinda showy..

my trunk is about 41" wide

but the little clip things on the side are about 12" high and they get in the way..

so maybe like a 38" wide by 15" tall and 12" deep?

i have a lot more questions but ill do alittle at a time lol

I just did up a design in torres calculator, with the specs you listed I came up with a ported box 2.16 cubes after port displacement, tuned to 32Hz with 12.5 inches of port per cube......

The specs are

H= 15"

W= 38"

D= 12"

Port Specs

H= 13.5"

W= 2"

Length= 28"

Cutout sheet would be

Top= 38"x12"

Bottom= 38"x12"

Side1= 13.5"x10.5"

Side2= 13.5"x10.5"

Front= 38"x13.5"

Back= 38"x13.5"
