slot port placement . need help

I'm building a sub box for my girlfriends Smart for two. I'm planning on slot porting with a single 8 inch sub.

the sub box is a rectangle 18 inch long 14 inches hight and 9 inches with external.

I was wondering if putting the sub on the same face as the port which is facing the end of the rectangle firing towards the rear or sideis a good idea or it using a steve meade style box with sub up port back is better.

its really all about testing which one will be loudest. i would start with sub back port back, then if that doesnt sound good, cover that hole with a peice of mdf, and then cut a hole in the top and mount the sub on the top.
