Quick Question on SUB BOX

I wanted to know if it mattered whether the location of the sub matters to sound.

I was going to build a box and wanted to know if the sub located on the side like a regular box or located on top of the box effects the sound and the ability of the loudness. If so which location is the best for a 4dr sedan?
