  1. Hey GotFi {sorry for the off topic post}

    ....but I bet earlier today, you saw (on the Yahoo 'most recent hits' list) Kat Von D....... and had to click it yourself.... then saw the photo of Kat with the hands over her tits, and thought to yourself, "Damn... that girl is freaking bad-ass"......

    Because > So did I ! .......I just wasn't thinking fast enough to save that shot as an avatar.... Doh ! :-)

  2. First off, does anybody know what the resonant frequency of an F150 Supercab would be ? {not a Super crew cab.... but still, a pretty big, extended cab}

    Secondly, if not, how would one find out what it is ?

    Finally, once I do find out what it is, tell me again how this should influence my enclosure tuning ? It's something like, you want to tune a little higher, or lower, than the vehicle resonant frequency, to avoid a really "peaky" type of setup, correct ?

    Anybody ?

    Thank you,

    Fish

  3. Hey Caravan, you said

    The truck is a 00 dodge ram 2500 extended cab. IIRC extended cabs usually have a really low resonant freq?
    granted, you did put a question mark behind this, like you were asking a question..... but people put question marks in the wrong place all the time {probably about as often as they spell the word 'the' > teh.... So, I'm assuming you were making a statement, and not asking a question.....

    And I'm wondering if this would be true of other extended cab pickups as well..... Since I have an extended cab F150.....

    Hmmmm,

    Fish

  4. Here's a little story for you to consider. I used to have a Chevy S10, regular cab. I tried a wedge box behind the seats, for two 12"s. It sucked. I built a bigger, thicker wedge (lost leg room) and that sucked too. Started going with only 1 of the 12"s.... which almost worked.... but started blowing the single subs.

    Finally I got tired of not enough leg room..... or speaker box cubes.

    I decided to hack out a 10" by 40" rectangle from the back of the cab, lined up with the same size cutout at the front of the bed. I did a custom boot that came out bombastic. Never leaked a drop in 8 years of use.

    Called RF back and said, "Okay..... Now tell me the airspace these subs > will do best in < instead of, what's the smallest they will work in.

    I then built a nice, big, cubicle shaped box, butted it up against the front of the bed....

    Hooked it all up.....

    And all these years later, I still remember that the first time I cranked it up (playing Dire Straights, Money for Nothing :-) I was completely floored !

    That setup worked so well, that even though I "tried" to top it, a couple of times, a few years later, I never could, and always ended up going right back to it, as it was.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    What I learned ? Little, behind the seat wedges SUCK ! If I had a reg cab, and had to have more cubes, I'd have to do another bed cutout.
    Fortunately, I now have a Supercab, because it would be tough to start hacking on a brand new truck.....
    Hack it ! And give yourself all the cubes you need ! (oh, you woud have to have a bedcover though..... I almost forgot that, as I always have)
    Peace,
    Fish
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Doh ! I just went bacxk and read your post again......

    I still contend that losing even 1" of leg room sucks, but maybe your like 5' tall. I'm 6'1" and love legroom.

    But I'm still tripping that you can squeeze 6 freaking cubes behind the seats of a reg cab ! What truck / year do you have ?

    I have to honest, the box I built for the blow through wasn't even 6 cubes......

    Hmmmmm,

  5. Right on e_train. That's probably good to keep in mind. I'd hope that my RF amp would have built in protection, but I'll try not to push it to too low a voltage.

    Peace,

    Fish

    Fish, i've noticed that alot of older amps such as coustic can be run at lower voltage espeacially if they are not rated at high wattage(i.e. 1000+).

    I had a cheap insignia amp from best buy rated at 250watts rms bridged, and I could run it all day without draining the battery, but I had a Power Acoustik Gothic Series 3000D Rated at 1700RMS @ 1 Ohm, and I ran it for 5 minutes with the switch off, and poof I let out the magic smoke, so its not that newer stuff blows easier its that alot of older stuff such as coustic, insignia, etc...wasnt rated for as much power or voltage.

    PS my PA amp had a warning on the back to not run it at anything lower than like 12.5Volts, and not to use anything smaller that 4AWG wire.

    Someone correct me if im wrong.

  6. Hey Just_Rob, I was just on the F150 forum, and I "thought" I found the answer... One of the gurus said, 110 amps on base models, and 130 amp on Lariats, 4 wd's, any with tow package (which mine has) and to be honest, 130 doesn't sound too bad to me..... But if it does have the Denso 150, that sounds really good, for a stocker.

    Oh and BTW, the 'other' Sears batteries you dealt with, might have been crappy, but the Platimum P1 is in fact, made by Odessey. I actually learned that from an Odessey employee.

    Ramen, I think your asking, "Running the stereo with the truck off, all the time" right ? Well, I can try to control the duration for which I do this..... but yes, I will probably do this really often. Especially when the system is new. I want to be able to concentrate on the stereo adjustments, tracks I'm playing, etc....... and / or, show it off to friends..... and I think any system sounds so much better / louder when your not contending with motor / road / exhaust noise.... especially my true dual exhaust.

    Ya' know wL<3bass, one would think that running an amp until the voltage dropped too low, forcing them to shut off, would be hard on them... and maybe it is, but I used to do it all the time, litterally for years, with my old Coustic (not Power Acoustic) amps, and never blew one in the 8 years I owned them. Maybe modern, top quality amps blow easier, than cheap ones from 18 years ago ? Doesn't sound right to me, but maybe.....

    Peace,

    Fish

  7. Hey Ramen, and ChevyBoy.....

    Ramem, you were too quick for me :-) I did come back and post a PS..... but you were already on it :-) Just one amp..... albeit, a fairly powerful one.

    ChevyBoy..... No doubt. Two things come to mind though, 1) I was thinking about getting one of those little LED voltage meters. Only about $30, easy to hook up, and they look pretty cool, and 2) 9 times out of 10, I have 1 or 2 big, fat deep cycle batteries under my bedcover.... Not hooked up to anything, just carrying them, to be used in my boat. So even if I get a little carried away, I can always jump my truck off of one of those.

    Peace,

    Fish

  8. probably not the permanent way I'd want to do it.... but just to get started.....

    Somebody said > Keep it simple.

    Okay. How about if I do the Big 3 upgrade on the stock alternator of my F150 {we are still trying to figure what it puts out.... seems that everyone has a different guess, but anyway) and then I replace my stock battery with a bad-ass one ?

    This might deserve a whole other thread itself, but anyway, here it is:

    I was searching for a really strong battery, and I found this one:

    http://www.odysseyfactory.com/autospecs.html

    Last one at the bottom of this page, will fit an F150, and they can be drawn down 80%, and charged up 400 times, like a deep cycle...... But they are like $325 !

    So, to make a long story short, I found out that you can get this same exact battery, but relabled by Sears, as a Platinum P1, for $189.95 :-) Or, you can get this same exact battery relabled by Stinger, for $350. Uhhhh... well lets see.....

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    So back to my situation.... What if I just upgraded my crappy stock battery to one of these, along with the Big 3 upgrade.... and then didn't try to play my stereo for "really long periods of time"..... maybe only 10 or 15 minutes, with the truck turned off.
    Certainly simple. Not too expensive.
    Would this get me by for a bit ? .....until I get my dual alternator hooked up.....
    Fish
    PS, In case you haven't read my other posts, I'll just be running 1 25 to Life Power 1000 amp (1150 to 1350 watts, depending on how I hook things up).
  9. Hey Footlong, that great ! Gives me a little more assurance, should I happen to have any problems with my amp, or anything else I have, or will order from SonicE in the future.
    Yea, they do offer some outstanding deals !
    Peace,
    Fish
    I just got it back from the manufacturer. They sent me a Brand New amp.. IDK why though.. It was a Power Acoustik.... I got 3 of "the same" amps, but one of the 3 was an older style.. go figure, the older one blew up.. After I sent it to them, they just sent me on of the newer styles, so now I have 3 matching amps and I can't bitch :)
  10. Hey kkiiaann33, of course their are a million and one posible variables (with subs, enclosures, power, etc}.... but generally speaking, I don't think 30hz is too low for an SQ box, and I think 48hz is probably good for many SPL setups (maybe a little higher).
    Anyway, I wish I knew how to ask such "general questions"..... maybe I'd get more responses :-)
    Maybe you can help me out with this....
    Peace,
    Fish
    i was thinking of making a box around 30 Hz for sound quality, now i was wondering if that is to low. and second question is for a SPL box. i want to tune it around 48 Hz, or should i go higher?
  11. Ya' know, again guys, I'm no expert, but I'd have to guess that mixing up all kinds of different subs, and / or enclosures, would be more likely to be LOUD {if you were to go through the frequency range, and pick the peaks that it played best} than it would be, to be clean, and more or less, flat across the spectrum.
    So I sure wouldn't doubt that the systems you guys mentioned, or the one the OP posted the photo, of were loud....... So if that were all a guy was going for......
    Me, I want it all :-) Loud, (able to be) flat (although I like a little more treble, and a LOT more ultra-low bass), and clean as can possibly be, too ! But like they say, want in one hand, $#!+ in the other, and see which one fills up the fastest. Doh ! Oh well.
    Peace,
    Fish
  12. Nobody wants to agree, or disagree with my response ??? I mean, don't get me wrong, I wasn't trolling... honest.
    But on the other hand, it's not like I'm some kind of car audio authority :-) Ooooh Ahhhh ! Fish Chris has spoken ! :-) LOL
    I'd really just like to learn more about this kind of thing myself.
    Peace,
    Fish
  13. Fresca.
    Alcolhol SUCKS ! Worst "DRUG" on the planet. Kills more people, in more F##### up ways, than ALL other drugs combined ! And this isn't just talking out my arse. This is FACT, based on actual numbers.
    I did tons of drugs and alcohol in my younger days, so I have plenty of personal experience to base this on too.
    Straight as an arrow now....... but if I were going to do drugs again, it would be marijuana for sure ! Alcolhol is just WAAAAY too hardcore..... {btw, this is just another example of how F##### up our legal system is..... Alcohol is legal, and pot isn't ? Who the F### came up with that ???}
    Done with my rant,
    Have a nice day :-)
    Peace,
    Fish
  14. Hey Pink Floyd, I'll tell you what I think.......
    I think that setup is liable to produce all kinds of funky ass cancellations, at all different oddball frequencies. In short, it might be loud {at certain frequencies where the speakers work together, instead of fight each other} but it will probably sound downright aweful.
    Now with that said, please understand that I'm the guy who's always thinking about all kinds of crazy out-of-the-box type of $#!+..... not just with car audio, but with all aspects of life in general.
    And "I DO BELIEVE" that their are ways to run multiple sized subs, in a manner in which they will compliment each other (lots of individual X-over points and such) or, subs of the same size and type, in different enclosures, doing different things, but in a way that they are not fighting each other.
    Now, although I don't know that this guy is not some car audio guru, who has all kinds of tricked out X-overs and wiring behind these subs, I'm just going to guess that this isn't the case.
    Of course with all of this said, once in a while, a noob tries something really reduculous, and against all rime or reason, it works really well ! But that would definately be the exception, rather than the rule.
    Just MPO...... but then again, I myself know just about enough to be dangerous :-)
    Peace,
    Fish
    haha i think thats a boston 555 maybe?
  15. Hey Footlong, that was lucky for you. What brand was that amp ?
    On the page for my RF Power 1000, it said at the bottom of that page, "Comes with a 1 year warranty through "Sonic Electronix". I figure if it were covered by RF, that would be a strong selling point that they would advertise.....
    Then you go to Crutchfield.com, and they sell the same amps for more, but do in fact advertise a factory warranty, and try to scare you away from the others, with their, "Don't get taken by gray market gear" speech......
    BTW, I do have experience with the whole gray market situation from "other than" car audio. Same thing goes with photography equipment.
    Peace,
    Fish
    I bought 3 amps from them. (to Fish Chris) 1 of my amps blew, But it came with a Manufacturer warranty. All I did was print off a reciept from Sonicelectronix and send it to the manufacturer.
    Excelent seller btw. A++
  16. Well, lets just put it this way {Myth Busters aside}...... at some point in decible levels, the tissue which holds your organs and other body parts together, will start to break down (I dunno..... maybe between 180 and 200 db's ?) and once you die, yea.... brown.... yellow... and whatever other colors you contain. But what's the unlimited car audio SPL world record again ? 181db's or something like that ?
    I've just never heard of any solid proof of a car stereo creating the brown note, at a lower, non-lethal level...... and if I did hear of it, I'd be tempted to think it was just the individual in question, who had a weak stomach.
    Peace,
    Fish
    PS, But I'm not trying to start any $#!+ flowing about it :-)
  17. This sounds like a pretty $#!tty thread :-)
    I thought mythbusters said it was "busted"..... or at least, no more than 'plausible', after they were not able to induce 'browness' with TONS of wattage and a butt load of big subs....
    Finally, I'd have to believe that it would depend somewhat on the person. Personally speaking, I've got a pretty strong stomach.
    On the other hand, if I were SM, and I was showing the 2 T15K system (especially with those sweet ass custom leather seats) I'd be using some moisture proof seat covers..... Because if ever their was a system that would make somebody $#!+ their pants....... :-) LOL
    Peace,
    Fish
  18. I've bought a few different things from them, and haven't had any problems whatsoever. In fact, unlike the poster above, they even gave me tracking numbers..... but nowadays that's not too important, as I had my work address added to my credit card, by my bank. Now I have anything of value sent there, as they are open 7 days a week, 14 hours a day. So always someone available to sign for me.
    However, this is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "IMPORTANT" <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
    You should understand that SonicElectronix is mostly a "gray market" company. In case you, or anybody do not understand what this is, it simply means, they are most often "not" authorized dealers of the products they are selling. Now this doesn't mean they are selling these products against the will of the big name companies they are selling. They are not.... But what it does mean, is that you will not get a warranty directly through that company for your product. Oh sure, SonicElectronix will give you an "in house warranty".... but something tells me, that might not be a real strong point of their business practices.
    In fact, what I'd really like to hear about, are the items that people bought through SonicE, and had problems with, and then, how those problems / in-house warranty issues were handled afterwards...........
    Anyway, I knew about this beforehand, but bought my RF 25 to Life Power 1000 through SonicE anyway. Why ? Because I paid $499 for a brand new amp that RF has a listed MSRP of $1299 for.......
    I believe that, "IF" their is a problem with my RF amp, RF will still repair it (if its repairable, of course) but as you would probably guess, they will charge me for it. Of course with the price I paid, and depending on the cost of the repairs, it might still be worth it.
    The choice, of course, is yours. You should just be well informed about gray market items ahead of time.
    Peace,
    Fish
  19. Hey trainman, that's funny you should mention this..... as that very thought had crossed my mind.... In fact, I had even started a post to offer some cheap (or basically free) photography for Steve, and I typed like 1 or 2 lines.... and then I thought to myself, "Well, I'm not really a proffessional photographer..... while Steves system really is as proffessional as it gets..... and besides, I haven't been around long enough for him, or anyone else here for that matter, to know that I'm not just some Internet dickhead ;-) LOL
    Anyway, now that it's been brought up, yea' Steve, if you would like me to give it a shot, I'd love to take a bunch of shots of whatever you want.... burn them on a disc for you... print them... whatever.
    All I'd really want in return, is some advice on my own system, from the man himself ! And a personal demo of "the system" :-)
    Hope this wouldn't make me a stere-ho :-) LOL
    Let me know,
    Peace,
    Fish
    I hear you man. I'm just anxious as shit to see / hear it !!!! :-) I'm hoping sometime in early 09' though.......
    WIND ! Are you freaking kidding me ! Nobody hates it more than I do ! I'm a fishaholic, and I live flat in the middle of the Carquinez straights ! {aka, the wind tunnel} Oh well.
    Hat's off to the most outrageous car audio build ever !
    Peace,
    Fish
  20. I hear you man. I'm just anxious as shit to see / hear it !!!! :-) I'm hoping sometime in early 09' though.......
    WIND ! Are you freaking kidding me ! Nobody hates it more than I do ! I'm a fishaholic, and I live flat in the middle of the Carquinez straights ! {aka, the wind tunnel} Oh well.
    Peace,
    Fish
    no completion dates......im taking it day by day. Today is so F#$king windy outside i dont even want to go out there. The wind whipping my tarps (that hang by my work area) and my banners gets on my last nerves. Its hard to focus that way. Maybe ill just go up to chickens like i did last nite and tip back a 40 or 2 and call it a night :D
  21. Hey Aaron, you got me beat on Stripers... My biggest is only that 31.2 lb'er I posted, which bugs the crap out of me, as I have buddies from these parts with numerours 40 plus, and even a couple of 50 plus Stripers ! Hey, check this page I did on my site, for my old buddy Fred McClintock, from back East; http://www.trophybassonly.com/id76.htm Unbelievable stuff ! Fred is da' man ! :-)
    Hey Footlong, yea', even on "normal" medium or medium heavy gear, those Sturgies really try to rip your arms off :-) I wasn't actually trying for Sturgeon when I caught that 71" Sturgeon on the micro-light..... But I had actually caught a good number of Sturgies on that same gear, up to about half that size. So I knew it was possible. But yea', quite the battle. Whooo Hooo ! :-)
    Peace,
    Fish
  22. Hey Namosh, fish sizes are a totally relative thing. An 8 lb'er from Kansas is freaking HUGE ! And you don't know how envious I am of you guys giant Flathead cats ! I caught one about 7 lbs in Louisiana once ;-) My biggest catfish was a 30.2 lb'er..... but it was a Channel cat, so that was definately a big one ! Again, size is relative.
    Anyway, keep a line in the water, and great fishing to you :-)
    Peace,
    Fish
    Alright.....I take back that fish-off thing! :D
    Those are some big ass fish...My biggest fish is a 52lb. flathead.
    I mostly fish for bass and my biggest is 8lbs. That seems tiny compared to yours but it's pretty big for northern Kansas.
    Here's a crappy cell-phone pic of the bass...
    Daves8lbbass.jpg
  23. Hey Philip, I can see where using different woofer sizes, or different power channels, while trying to put out the same frequencies, could cause cancelation. However, I wouldn't think this would be a problem, if the subs were the same size, and on the same power channel.
    Hmmm,
    Fish
    hmmmm. i'm really interested in this too. i'm trying to help plan out a build that would have multiple woofers but not enough space to port all of them. the idea about having 2 ported boxes and one sealed was floating around. it kinda got shot down because some say the woofers would cancel eachother. anyone tried a sealed and ported box at the same time and had good resultts as well? anyone try it and failed?
