Just 'finished' my months long stereo building yesterday with some new subs in a new box and a new amp etc. Then today I left a parking lot and bottomed out my car (damn lot always does that) hitting the front end hard. The speakers all quit working and all I can hear is the sub. I am frickin' awe struck. Where do I even start?

Well this is as shitty as I had thought. I'm listening to great speakers with great music but can't 'wang' on em. I suppose I won't know how good or loud they sound until they are loosened up anyway, breakin-period or not. at least the old pillow i cut open and tossed inside is workin its magic

So I just got a nice started box from another forum member for free (how about that luck?) and tore up my old pillow and stuffed in the box and it sounds great. I appreciate all the help. and lance aka 64 you are the best. i'm very happy to finally have my car 'done'

.. in lost commissions. When I'm supposed to be doing work for my own financial benefit (plus the last month before they close down and lay us off) but instead I'm reading the damn forum all day. Oh well. There's a few days left this month. Its actually not much I have to do, but it requires concentrating for more than 2 minutes (literally) at a time.

Let me guess. You have kids in michigan? I guess anywhere can do it, but that state is notorious for those types of moves. Maybe a drunken weekend up in Land O' Lakes? Hmm? You can tell us.

I think I remember those. My first HU was an alpine that I swear was hot and missing the amp lol. At least the HU powers my speakers at all, but god damn if this doesn't mean I really am underpowering my infinity setup. I need something to just boost them so they sound good and loud yet I doubt my electrical is going to handle it. I was asking here before if Pioneer does HU boosters like Alpine does.

lol, wow, dammit! I swear this DEH-P3000IB from Pioneer said like 50X4 rms in the ad when I bought it but the manual says 22x4 continuous and when you find the CEA logo it does indeed say 14 watts. what crap! LOL

I don't have much to bass it on but the kickers definitely seem stiffer than most speakers.

good point man, i keep forgetting that. it appears tuning of the HU output would be also a smart thing to do during the initial 'break-in' period. {edit} just realized I know how to test output voltage of the HU, but don't really know what to do with that info once i have it lol

lol, this thread is great. i love this forum. yeah ray, i think you make a fairly convincing argument. since the speakers are cheap, its not the end of the world if they blow early, but damn If I wouldn't like to get it right on the first try. and the smoking coil in the trunk story is classic!

Well I found the thread now: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/ind...93&hl=BREAK But I'm in the same boat as the other kid. I had assumed 1/4 gain for the two weeks is fine, but someone made the point you can get the subs fairly loud at 1/4 I guess the advice about testing the speaker's stiffness with a finger is good, I just get nervous touching speakers for some reason. I'm worried i'm going to go all Mice & Men on em and poke too hard.

I have searched for a topic on this (I think I remember one) but couldn't find it. how does one ensure the 2 weeks of breaking in subs is done right? I would like to almost 'idiot proof' it by perhaps just setting my input volume to a set amount and still be able to listen to my music at the normal loudness that I prefer. Again, this is for two cvr 12 in, i guess, a sealed box (got lazy and am buying one from someone for now)

I can almost remember the old days when I didn't have to pay into taxes. Its like once you turn a certain age you stop getting refunds.

Great suggestions! It will be done, now there is no excuse (and the worst part is i'm fairly experience with tools but just have none at my disposal). Oh and I was worried about the mdf being sanded. It just seems like a weird texture for the rounded corners in the ports, oh well. Balsa is soft but also the strongest wood known to man (in log form) so I must have perceived wrong. P.S. for any curious, the craiglist guy just replied he would charge $125 plus the sheet of MDF provided by me. Wow. That is not an option.

I LOVE THAT BOX. As I said in another thread. Amazing. I don't know anyone with a table saw and routers are hard to come by nowadays as well. I did help an uncle build his entire friggin house a few years back, he must have these things. Maybe I will ask him. I went to home depot and looked at the MDF and it was so soft and crappy, I really am not looking forward to trying to build with handsaws lol

haha, thanks man. Getting laid off sorta of got me here. I planned on having a hobby in case i was out of work for a week or two, but now our last 'paid' week (next week) is going to be spent back at work doing... whatever they want us to do. some severance is helping ease the pain and might turn into a health profit, but I guess it all boils down to my impatience. i think tonight i'll go do some re-wiring and put in a replacement 4X6 tonight, maybe grind out my rear 6X9 slots so the speakers sit low.. that should get my head in the game. its just so odd that you buy these speakers and then you have to like woodwork a bunch of stuff to even use them? isn't that odd? what kind of crazy people sell you something and then make you build crap to use it?
