  1. I measured a production v.2 and a newly re-built v.3 with the final compliance side-to-side with the same amount of play time (neither is fully broken-in). Just to compare... looks like we nailed the stiffness based on FS... and we see a drop in Qts due to the higher BL (also higher sensitivity) :

    IMAG1185.jpg

    BL^2/RE = 70.17

    IMAG1243.jpg

    BL^2/RE = 85.78

I don't trust the Woofer Tester as an "end all be all" of spec measurement either so don't read too far into it... but comparing on the same day back-to-back I can tell if my design goals are being met :)

The spec on our web-site for the SA-8 v.2 was done with a Klippel machine after full break-in for reference.

  2. Sorry for the noob question but does the mega roll take away cone area? It looks like it has less area but it may just be because the surround is so huge! Thanks

    A little -- about 10% compared to a very average surround like a Z v.3 series.

This translates to about 0.3dB -- which if you are utilizing even a small amount of the additional stroke allowed by the surround is moot.

  3. While it is not the "JF Signature" model... it will honestly do just as well in terms of objectively low distortion.

It may not be as much of a SEALED box driver in terms of low F3 -- but all non-linear specs are as good or better than what I was working on with the JF Signature.

I decided to hold off on the Signature until I can complete some other, even better, ideas and parts.

  4. The tooling itself is not done in-house -- the frame is our (patent pending) design, though :)

IMO... things like 12" spiders WILL become more readily available in the future... but possibly more-so in home audio. Either way I'm ready to use it to the fullest for Sundown at the last whether everyone else does the same or not!

It may take a while, of course... the Ti frames were tooled ~15 years ago and it took basically until I tooled my frames to get something else any better in terms of clearances and strength. Now you'll see some other guys that, like myself, actually want to push the envelope doing their own frames... B2 just did a 15" frame, DC did an 8" and 15" frame, and Incriminator is working on frames too. The future of big powered subs is pretty promising once you leave behind 8" spiders and standard frames on those models (obviously theose parts are still perfect for units that aren't top of the line).

  5. sometimes shit happens. its nice that a company takes their cs serious.

YES -- it does indeed happen. So for those times when it does -- we do our best to take care of it.

We send out 1000s of speakers that are 100% perfect -- one thing I have learned in the business is that silence means everyone is happy :) So you'll hear the most about the few that didn't go perfectly. That is normal, of course, in any business.

The crew & I have been working every day to increase production reliability of our products -- it's been a huge learning curve with the new platform. The Mega-Roll is extremely tricky to work with by comparison to older surrounds.

In fact... I have been developing a Mega-Roll v.2 primarily for the purpose of increased assembly reliability. We aren't just sitting around passively by any means -- the crew works every day to improve assembly quality and reliability. Every driver that isn't perfect is looked over and learned from.

Bottom line, though, doesn't matter how good you are; how many speakers you build; or how much you check it; stuff happens. At that point it comes down to service. We do our best in that regard and I feel most people are very happy.

This particular case is one of those "one in a million" scenarios -- but I am glad we were able to resolve it in the end.

  6. looks like the normal spoke basket with less larger spokes. Sorta kinda like the dc baskets.

I'm not a cosmetics guy -- the appearance is really secondary to me to doing what I want.

That being said it's most reminiscent of, say, an 18" 6-spoke -- but more rounded, bigger landings, much thicker, taller, etc. I'm not the kind of guy to put flames on it or any un-necessary cosmetic touches. It's big, it's strong, it works. To me -- being a beautiful piece of equipment follows naturally with it's working well.

  7. I've mentioned it in a few places... but back when I was in college with much less knowledge I was dreaming about a driver with 6" of p-p travel. At the time not fully knowing or understanding that sort of massive undertaking it would be financially and parts wise to be able to make such a driver.

So now... after 8 years in the business I have finally tooled the biggest part of the puzzle to making it possible.

Suspension and motor are both things I can definitely figure out -- but having a frame to allow it is huge.

Obviously it cannot happen overnight but I will be working towards making that very special 18" driver with unheard of throw. Obviously as a company I need to address things that sell the best first -- but I am getting close to the dream.

Iit's this type of thing that keeps me excited about speakers every day. It's more than a business for me -- I love to push the envelope because this is what *I* wanted when I was simply on the consumer side... the new platform stuff shows it already, I believe... not everyone agrees or likes them (at least in the original Mega-Roll format) but I don't think anyone can dismiss the impact of the X, Z v.4, etc on the industry.

I know some people think I'm crazy for the sheer # of parts I tool and keep in stock (which grows every year) -- but it's just how I roll... I want to be able to make something that anyone can enjoy no matter what they like.

  8. Anything in particular you need to know ?

The jist of it... STRONG frame to hold heavy motors (it is ~10 lbs or so of aluminum); giant clearance of 6" p-p; holds spiders of 10, 11, and 12" diameter (I typed that wrong in the first thred... 10" is the smallest landing rather than 9.25"); will accept a 5" coil in the base; has a proprieteary 8-bolt pattern (which will get it's own vent ring that I am tooling) as well as cast adapter for standard 6-bolt 127mm adapter (that mates to the current vent ring); and it looks sweet.

In order to use it to it's fullest... I need to tool 12" spiders, another surround, and a special motor -- all of which I am working on as time allows.

When applied to current motors we will use 10" spiders as nothing we make can support 6" p-p yet -- I am tooling spider spacer pieces for it as well for linearity and to rise up and meet the cone as the 10" landing is recessed down a good bit.

Took a while to get to this one after I did the 8, 10, 12, and 15" frames for cost reasons -- but now is the time :)
