  1. Main reason for wanting something with more room is to be able to haul things like a bed, dresser and what ever else I may bring along. Also an suv is just better looking than some sedan if ya ask me. I'm sure I could get a Tahoe from like 95ish, but I agree the 5.7s are gas guzzlers. I've considered getting an Explorer, ya know keepin all my rides Ford. Even with an Explorer I'd still need another 1500 to get something decent. The search continues, whatever I end up with will have a small system in it.
  2. 60 every two days in gas driving an Expidition? Kinda makes me not to want a tahoe....not much differance in size between the two really. Don't think a Tahoe will get much better mileage. Course I could always move closer to my work, but don't think that would make sence since I'm planing on moving back to the Bay Area Cali around April or March '11. That is if I can get this crap for school worked out.
  3. The Tahoe is still what I'm lookin for but so far I've come up empty. Sure I've found a few Tahoes but problem is that all around here are 4wd and I want a 2wd one. Yes they are harder to find, but I don't plan on off roading it and roads around here or in Fremont where I'm moving to next year don't get that bad. Some how I think the Taurus will make the drive out to Cali next year.
  4. I looked around on kbb.com and saw that I could sell my Taurus for around 1400, but with the rear bumper not being in the greatest shape and the a/c compressor froze up I'm thinkin that most I'd get is around 1200 if I'm lucky. Either case I'd still be short gettin a new truck or suv thats in decent shape. Oh well, guess the Taurus stays a bit longer.
  5. My names Andrew livin now in Western Ky but orginally from the STL, I found this forum though a few vids on youtube. I've always been interested in car audio since probly high school. I'm in hopes that this forum will help increase my knowlege of car audio.
  6. I'm not lookin for a new ride to change peoples driving habits or anything. I'm looking for a new ride mainly cause I want something different and something bigger. Sure getting a white crown vic would help with people noticing me, but even that wont really help. I've thought bout getting one, but I think I want something besides a car. For 1700 around here I can get a decent ride, shit my last 2 cars cost me around 800 a piece, neither one of them needing much work. Only thing my Taurus needs is a a/c compressor and its good to go. Now I am a deffisive driver, I pay more attention to whats around me than my own car. I'm waitin for the day when someone messes up real bad and ends up hitting me or vice versa, don't want that to happen for sure. Besides with moving 2k miles, don't ya think a suv would work out better when moving big objects? Also the Taurus does not have a very good aftermarket support, which makes making it unique pretty hard. I want something that has better aftermarket support, so I can make it more my own and not like another persons ride.
  7. a full size suv would give me room for a system and passengers....hmm
  8. You actually did describe KY right there. There's a turn off the main road onto the side road to our apartments that's around a slightly sharp bend at 55mph (divided highway) with no turn lane, almost been rearended more than enough times. Anyways, what's your budget? What are you looking for? 2dr, 4dr, van, truck? Budget and preference? Planned stereo? Moar details = epicness. What part of Ky ya in man? I'm close to Paducah. Anyways I don't really know what my budget is right now, I know I can get at least 1200 for the Taurus. So I guess 1000-1700 would be a good starting point. I'm lookin for either a 4 door suv or ext. cab pick up. No plans on stereo yet, gonna wait to see what I end up with before I make that decision. I'd prefer Ford, but I'm open to anything really.
  9. Currently I've got a 93 Taurus that I drive daily but, I think I want to upgrade. Seems as if no one can see me or if they do they just don't care. Everyday that I'm driving somewhere I've got some prick who either cuts me off, pulls out in front of me where I've got to slam the brakes, drives well under the speed limit (which apparently is ok here in ky) or some other dumb shit. I've lost count as to how many people I've nearly hit cause of their stupid mistakes. Sure I'm not sayin that I'm a better driver or anything, I'm just more curtious. I was thinking bout getting a truck or suv. My problem with that tho is I drive 70+ miles a day, 4-5 times a week. So I dunno. I really like my Taurus, but I'm finding the Tahoe to be a sexier beast. Which kinda is scary considering I've only owned Fords and Mazda and never really thought of owning a Chevy. I'm not sure what to do here, if I upgrade I'll be pushing the system back even longer cause of moving and school. Hell a Tahoe would be good to have for the move, can't fit too much in Taurus. Well if ya'll have any ideas or whatever, I'd love to hear them. As always I trust those in the SMD forum.
  10. Ok a few thoughts here. The look I'm going after is clean and simple, and will keep a good chunk of my trunk space open as well as give me access to my spare. After all this is a daily driver and my only car. I think I'm wanting something like what was done to this Civic. It's clean and simple, all wires and such are hidden from view. It shows off the amps nicely, only change I think is that I would have the subs firing towards the back and Visable, no acrylic windows in what I would do.The trunk panel also I would not do, looks cool but this is not a show car. Or maybe what I could do is use the factory opening for the subwoofer some of these Tauruses came with and have the subs firing towards the front. Hmmm, thats a tough one. Well I'll keep updates and maybe start a new thread in member builds once it gets started.
  11. Yeah it can be real easy to mess up something if your not careful. I know from previous experience, right now I've got a door panel that won't stay in place. Sadly it just happens to be the drivers door, I have tried using new clips and screws. Well the screws worked longer than the clips. I'll figure it out tomorrow. Far as wiring goes I think I have an idea. The power wire will run from the battery down the drivers side of the car and end in trunk, mainly cause the battery is on the drivers side. I'd run the rca cables down the passenger side of the car. Then run new speaker wires to the speakers. Doesn't seem hard. One question would running a 4 ch amp to power the mids and highs front and rear be a good idea?
  12. Thats great info guys, i appreciate that. I am looking for more of a SQ set up rather than a SPL set up. Think I will eventually upgrade my head unit, I just got this one cause it was cheap and I need music in my car. Specially driving an hour each way to work. I know for the front stage I'll be going with a componet set but I don't know about the rear yet. All the work will be done by me, I can't afford to let a shop do it for me. Besides that, how else would I learn if someone did it for me?
  13. Thought I'd post up the start of my system I'm installing in my 1993 Taurus GL. I'm starting with a JVC KD-S16 head unit. It's nothing special, but for the price I decided to get it. Now it only has one pre-amp out put, so I think adding more than one amp could be tricky...so I'm thinking maybe a 5 ch amp is the way to go when I get to that part. This will be a slow build since work is a little slow, plus I'm trying to save up for moving next year. Headed back to the Bay Area Ca. Okay back on track here, I have replaced the speakers with VR-3 6.5" 3-ways in the doors and VR-3 6.5" enclosure that I stuck in the back. These are only temporary speakers, didn't like how the stock ones sounded so yeah. The JVC is the third head unit I have put in this car, I had a VR-3 media head unit but right away there was no sound, turns out the problem was the head unit cause all the wires were hooked up right, next I had a Sony head unit that worked great till a few days ago, all the sudden on speaker quit workin. I checked the connections and even ran new wires and still got nothing. Now I have this JVC and we will see how long it lasts. I don't know why these head units suddenly quit workin right. Okay enough from me, I want to hear ideas from ya'll. I will take all into consideration, but remember I have no training in any of this and don't have that much money. Also I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to fiberglassing or anythng like that. So lets have them ideas people. Be nice
