  1. im going to be ordering 2 of either amp.

    some questions regarding these.

will the DC run happily at 0.7ohm?

have there been any bench tests done on the DC Amp?

which amp is more durable, and less lightly to destroy itself?

my power supply is a 210 amp alternator with adjustable regulator, and 8x Hawker Gennesis batteries. with lots of 0Awg!

What would you guys recommend? im preferably looking for opinions from people who have used both, but even if you have just used one, id like some feedback.

    Thanks guys

  2. got some more done to this lately.

decided to put a big scoop up to take all the pressure off the tailgate and stop it flapping like mad, and an MDF roof too :D

also some more batteries, closer to the amps so there is less resistance in the cables.

its far from finished, still needs a lot of work doing on it.

    The start of the scoop...

Scoo out to fiberglass it properly

More batteries. note the messy as hell cables that are all coming out and being replaced.

    scoop back in temporarily

and thats it for now, will ad more when i do more!

  3. Easy and cheap way is to run cable down from your amp speaker terminals to the front of the car, then hook up your multi meter set to ac and play until you reach your clipping voltage. Or even wire in a permanent volt meter to the dash.

the volt meter is a good idea, might give it a go.

how long do you guys play for with this sort of power?

will the subs take it all day long?

  4. Alright Jason. Now your in boot boomers extreme why don't you add some batteries into the rear foot wells. I don't think the little hawkers are up to it tbh, I've got 8 of the yellow ones and they just cope with 4 1500ds. Or is this for the metro ;)

nah its for the escort, and i think i found another amp 2 use.......... lets say the guy who has it now benched it @ 10krms @5ohm ;)

and i am getting another 3 of the hawkers that will be going where the bench of the back seats r now, so 7 of them plus the 180 amp alt (when i get it) also with the adjustable reg too.

i was thinking about wiring in a permanent scope thing so i can see when im playing that the signal is clean :)

    What do you guys reckon?

  5. I think you should try it. Wire it up, turn it up slowly and Watch your voltage if it drops under 13 volts with the vehicle running unhook it.

Why if it drops under 13v? I haven't heard of an amp smoking at 13v...

Refer to my quotes for some info from Boon on low voltage and amp damage.

i dont supose you have a link to the topic that was posted on do you?

    Thanks

Boon first says it on the first page, then on the second gives a detailed description of the circuitry and electronics inside an amplifier and how they work.

Thanks, thats a great read :) very informative.

  6. so you like to play 20 hz frequencies? Whats your box tuned to?

    31/32ish

    test frequencies are 20, 25, 33, 40 and peak, which is 36.

i know playing below tuning is bad etc etc, and i dont play 20 hz tones daily, its on ocasions, and have never had any propblems with any other subs doing the same thing.

and if it was down to the tone, then y did only 1 sub go???

  7. 20 hz tone? gee wonder why it shit itself. let me guess free air too huh

yeah, after i heard the rattle i took it out the box and played it quietly, had about 10mm movement tops. just cause its a 20 hz tone dosent mean thats what killed it m8. and it just so happens thats 1 of the frequencys that i get tested on, so yeah i do play it loud @ 20 hz. my other (brand new) sub is fine, as well as every1 elses in the same competition format. now could you please offer some usefull info or go away :)

  9. right, the coil finally stopped working on saturday night.

just been playing around with the subs, and when i was playing a 20hz tone through it i could hear a rattle coming from where the spider joins the cone, and where the tinsel leads go in.

this wasnt a scraping, it was a rattle, and was definately coming from the sub. i have made a video of it, just gotta wait for my bro to get back and get it on the pc and upload it.

im hoping its just lose tinsel leads and can be repaired with just a new dustcap, and not a total recone.

  10. well i got a bit bored and wanted some more. moved the amps and changed the port.

got an extra 49 square inches, and it is quite a lot more brutal.

future plans are the alternator. thats next on my list of things to do.

and then upgrade the amps. what would you guys recomend feeding these subs? i was thinking a sundown 3500 to each one. would they take more than that tho as people run those amps on the XL's. what would the Lv 5 take daily?

If you were thinking of a Sundown 3500, why not email a DC dealer about a couple DC 3.5ks? They are actually pretty damn cheap for 3.5Ks. Or maybe seeing if you could get a couple of AQ 3500s.

i would like the DC3500's, as i dont think there are any in this country yet, and i would love to be the 1st with them. i will make a proper decision when i have some spending money lol. could a dealer pm me with a price on a pair of 3500's please :)

  11. the sub can take 3k as long as you dont clip at all. i dont recommend you running at .5ohm.

why wouldnt you recomend running at .5 ohm?

if he had a 1ohm stable amp, and good power supply, run it at 2ohm daily, and 0.5 for burps in competition.

as long as the amp is getting enough power it will be fine. after box rise etc it will be geting more than 0.5 any way.

my amps run daily at 0.7 and are fine.

not saying you are wrong/arguing with you, just asking a question :)

i can usually tell by the question, the persons experience level and i give an answer based on that. going to half ohm means seriously pushing the limits of your equipment and you need to be ok with blowing something up. I dont think the OP is at that stage.

so while battling imp rise with a low nominal load is the correct answer for some people (i was doing it myself) its not the answer for everyone.

aahhhh ok cool. was just wondering is all :)

altho im not ok with blowing anything up i still run under impedence, but keep an eger eye on volts and how hot stuff gets :)

  13. Sounds like time for a recone. Shoot me a pm and I'll get you taken care of.

Florida is a bit far for me dude, i live in London lol

how hard is it to recone a sub tho? wached a few vids on youtube and the hardest bit seems to be lining up the coil. does a recone pack come with the (cant remember the name now) things to hold the coil centre?

other than that seems pretty easy....

    bet im wrong lol

if its pretty easy i may give it a go

  14. while i was playing last night, i noticed one sub was moving more than the other, and there was a funky smell......

thaught it may have been a coil, and today i think i pretty much confirmed it. now i dont have a volt meter, so i just (at very low volume) ran it at 1 coil at a time, and 1 dosent work :(

is it recone time? or is there anything else it could be? i did put the speaker cables directly onto the tinsel leads to make sure it wasnt the terminal.

it just seems a bit odd that only 1 coil went
