  1. I have quite a bit of experience with the board in the CT2.5's. 4k burps (clamp method) on batts if you keep rise to under 1.5 or so is about the best you can hope for.

That's still 8k though. I'd want at least (3) solid G31's for that. But depending on your listening/demo'ing habits, I bet you could get by with a 3400 underhood and a pair of 3100 or 3000's in the back.

So... b2 zero.5 would likely put out more?

Yes. Won't be night and day to the ear, but it's a pretty solid gain on the meter.

Funny... I've never clamped the Zero on batts.

  3. Holy hell. 16 pages of beating a dead horse to come up with.... zero new information.

One thing I hadn't considered that Tony touched on (and that is annoying me now) is the markup. Yeah... aluminum is cheaper. And it very welll should be; becuase copper is trading ~ $3.25/lb right now while aluminum is more like $0.80/lb. That makes copper 4x as valuable yet CCA is only ~ 1/2 the price. Those bastards!!! CCA should be like, 50 cents a foot, damnit.

In my world... I use what's close or what's cheap. And that's usually welding cable. It's f'n wire. I could not give two shits. But then again... I don't try to pass 500A through a single 20ft run of 1/0.

I applaud the educational vids. They're sorely needed for some, redundant for some but uniteresting to most. Or is it disinteresting?

Wake me when you get to the 600 level courses.

  4. He could save himself a ton of time if he just snapped pics of the results and posted them. Especially since the YT vids aren't getting a lot of views.

I test amps all the time and it's a bit of an ordeal. I stopped doing vids and just post screen shots and results now.

With just pics and text, it's maybe an hour's worth of time. To shoot, edit and upload vids... it's a much larger time investment. Honestly... I just want the results anyway. I'm an amp whore and I don't like watchin his vids. Just post the results.

He really needs to start a thread like mine with all of his dynos. I have a huge thread of clamps on another forum. I hear about how helpful it is all the time to have them all in one place in text format. It would be a pain to navigate all the vids to find an amp you're looking for. Maybe one of you guys can go through all of his vids and compile them into a thread? List all the amps and results in a big ass list. Update it everytime he tests an amp.

[Edit: and why is everybody so concerned with testing old school amps? i don't get it. Are you guys really that interested to see what an Orion 225 does? It's just not very relevant anymore. Not enough for him to waste time on anyway.]

  5. There are a lot of things that contribute to the inaccuracy of clamps, but you eliminated all of them that you could. The biggest one (usually) is the use of peak/hold. But the really important one that we just can't eliminate is the phase angle between voltage and amperage on a reactive load. You can account for it with a scope that reads them sperately and calculate the angle, but who the eff is gonna do that?

    Oh well. Such is life.

    Nice test.

  6. Interesting results. And surprising to say the least. Can I get a link to this "supercap" that was used? I find it very hard to believe that 1F outperformed 100F in a burst situation. That's extremely counterintuitive, all things being equal.

I can tell you with utmost certainty that *my* supercaps absolutely pwn batteries on burps. It's not even close. And from my testing/experience, they work awesome in daily situations too. They're not cheap, but then again... neither are batteries.

I guess I'll go troll CL for some car audio caps and do some of my own testing.

  7. didnt know that about solder, always that it provided the best connection.

Most people do. But what happens is... the solder works it's way in between everything, because that's what it does, and basically insulates it. It's fine for smaller connections, mind you. But I wouldn't use it on something where current transfer is paramount,

It don't get no better than this, cuz...

  8. A combination of crimp and solder works best.

Sooo... you want your copper or aluminum shielded with... a shitty conductor? Silver solder (contrary to it's name) has 16% of the conductivity of copper. No thanks. Ill crimp.

Could you give some info as to where you are coming up with these numbers? :)

    100.00 2 Copper, Pure

    16.60 1 Silver, Tin Solder

  9. Lol. We're on the same page, man. I think you thought I was putting down on music builds by touting SPL numbers. Which, in fact, I was doin quite the opposite.

I'm an SPL guy. But I loooove huge violent music builds and respect the crap out of them. But sometimes I wish the respect went the other way too. Lol.

You guys keep rockin. Wish I could get out there and see some of your builds. Maybe at finals?

  10. How am I missing the point? My first reply was that Thor isn't a numbers guy and then tried to put someone else's lofty SPL claims in perspective.

You can't compare a numbers build to an SPL build. Then a few people called BS on my claims. It did get derailed a bit. I apologize.

But having been a part of the loudest trunk on the planet for the last 3-4 years... I thought I was entitled to an opinion.

  11. Thor always builds for music though. He's not a "numbers" guy.

And 58 with (2) 12's is loud, but it's not like... out of this world. My teammate can do 60 with (2) 10's

I'd like to see proof of this.

    Whenever you're ready

Lol. Ask around. John Perdeye. He sandbagged a 56.9 for a 30 sec average on music at finals. (2) Tantric HDD10's. Hell... I can do 57 on (2) 10's in 0-600w.

  12. And what amp is that?

    B2 M1

I'm surprised by how many people are surprised by the results. Lol.

i doubt you see 10K and i doubtyour voltage is always at 14.4 or higher...

Actually... I was being conservative. It's more than 10k. And yes... my voltage is fine.

umm...yes its rated more than 10K at 16Volts....but they take a big amount of energy for the amp alone to get it going at full power

It's underrated. And I use caps. I have no amperage or voltage concerns.

  13. Side note: The maximum theoretical power that an amplifier could produce at full clipping (square wave) is double the clean RMS. In the real world it is usually about 30-50% more. So an amp that does 50 watts per channel clean could put out 65-75 watts clipped and distorted to hell. However, the peak SPL wouldn't increase by this same amount, if at all.

Curious how you think these companies that grossly over rate their amps are doing their ratings. You reckon they're just making it up? Squaring maximum voltage?

  14. ~ 200w for $57. That's ~ $0.29/watt clean. Hmm... even though the ratings are inflated, it's still cheaper dollar per watt than a lot of amps I can think of.

    Just playing devil's advocate.

i dunno bro - that is the sale price. Who know's what the MSRP on it is. My RF T2500.1bd is $1599 but i think most people can find them for about $1100 (or cheaper) online. They are all in the 3300 watt range which would put them @ .33 cents a watt or less depending where you got it. Ill take the RF, thanks. LOL :D

I with you. It's not just about dollar per watt. I'm more interested in durability.

    Hmm... my amp clamps ~ 10k and costs $2k. 20 cents a watt. That's a bargain! Lol
